Royal Mail Dispute - Interim Agreement

Since Friday's National Briefing, further meetings have taken place with Royal Mail, ACAS and Brendan Barber. Roger Poole, a former National Officer of NUPE, has been agreed as the independent Chair to take the process of negotiation on paragraph 4 of the interim agreement forward. Roger Poole will be in attendance tomorrow at the inaugural meeting of the independent process. Royal Mail has agreed that the first substantive agenda item will be the company sharing an updated version of their business plan. This will help inform the structure of ongoing negotiations. A second meeting is scheduled for Friday to discuss an improved benefits package.


The interim agreement commits both parties to making significant progress by early December. At a meeting today to review overall progress the PEC has identified the union's strategic priorities to meet the significant progress criteria.


We recognise genuine problems persist in some areas in relation to resolving local disputes and restoring normal services. In front of ACAS Royal Mail has confirmed that the agreement provides for utilisation of CWU members before casuals when additional overtime is required. Royal Mail has also confirmed that genuine negotiations on local agreements mean you can go back on change. However, the company has stated that they believe some of the current local problems are due to our members, in some locations, participating in collective go slows. The CWU has refuted this point. It has been agreed that divisional engagement must continue in an effort to resolve problems and Royal Mail has agreed to a backstop of further national intervention if required.


Given the seriousness of the situation the Postal Executive has agreed to review the position next Tuesday.


We have delayed issuing a national letter to members because of the fluidity of the current position, but we hope to send out a member's letter before the end of this week. In the meantime, we attach a copy of a Reps Brief on the CWU/Royal Mail Interim Agreement. Please ensure all your local representatives receive a copy.

They know exactly what is going on around them.
There will be a token gesture of conciliation in the D.Os and M.Cs over the next few days.
The PEC will review on tuesday and say well done.

I agree.Despite the claims that we had them by the balls (again wonderful homoerotic imagery) no one has explained what would have been achieved by not calling off the strikes.Similarly what exactly will be achieved by striking again now.We HAVE achieved concessions.We will not achieve everything we want and no amount of clamouring for more strike action will change that.

I read the Reps Brief from the web site - this Interim Agreement Document was dated the 18th November - which would suggest that it was in reference to the PEC meeting held today and in fact does refer to it BUT the Reps Brief is dated 12th November 6 days before - so regardless of what the PEC decided TODAY the decision not to reinstate the strikes had been taken 6 days ago by all accounts. What time do Boots close?

well said i know alot in our office are seriously thinking of quitting the union. when the changes came into our office we were told just be thankful you have a job.
