For gods sake wake up and smell the coffee come next year after the election IT will be sold off, forget unions forget early starts, forget early finishes, too many on here it seems to me have never worked anywhere else, wake up you are in for a shock and there is nowt you will be able to do about it.
Before I came to work in this noble company I worked for 14 years in a family owned buisness, many a time if a job had to be finished on a deadline it meant me staying , none of this work to my time crap it had to be done or the door is there out you go, mark my words this is where we are going, you old timers have had it good for so long but believe me the good times are well gone, welcome to the real world of privatasion.

I must first state that I am a relatively short timer (6 years) and I have worked outside RM. The bit I highlighted shows that you and your previous employer had the goodwill for each other that allowed this to happen, and I am fairly certain that this goodwill was reciprocated in turn. Many RM posties used t come in early, use their cars and forgo their breaks because RM had the "goodwill" to allow people to "Job&Finish". But know all the goodwill has evaporated because of the "attacks" RM has made upon posties. 20%+40%, impracticable lapsing, continuous absorbing, impracticable duties, no pay rises and anti union media briefs to name but a few.

RM could have the goodwill of its workforce and get what it wants, if practicable, if it just engaged the workforce and rewarded their hard graft, instead of hitting them with a stick all the time. In the carrot and stick approach if you use the stick too much eventually the donkey will bite back or dig in its heels.

I worked at a family run business when I left school and its true what you say sometimes you did have to stay on and work late to see a job out.
However the company owners worked right along side you . Its nothing like a delivery office when you return after going over by an hour to find the Doms went home 3 hours earlier. :d'oh!
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

I agree TBT. As for coming in early, cars , forgoing breaks etc , that is still going on relentlessly. It doesn't seem to matter what RM do to them , some people will never get the message. When some sections in our office were absorbing earlier on this year, they were not only coming in early , but they were using their cars for the absorbed bit. Not only are they paying for petrol for their own duty , but someone elses too. It is all these practices you mention that have got us into this mess. And in response to the original post, i am an old timer. I've delivered at 7.00 at night at christmas and been through the ridiculous 1 over 4 second deliveries. Had it so good for so long indeed. It's going back to all that s**t that i'm rallying against

haveagojoe - that's why trade unions were organised by working people, to put an end to
exploitation and forelock tugging. Do you really want us to go back to the eighteenth century?

That is unnacceptable and actually illegal. You can't tell us that 'some employers threaten their staff' so we should put up with it too!!! What a totally outrageous thing to propose. There are kids in sweat-shops in China so should we take our kids out of school and send them back down the mines??? Employment law and the union movement work to keep good working conditions and what you have described is NOT 'privitisation' it is worker exploitation. SHAME ON YOU for acceptiong it and telling us to accept it too. :no no :no no :no no
