Re: Annual Leave Criteria
I find it a stupid farce. How do you know what holidays you want to take in 2011 now.
Ive given them 3 weeks what I want and I'll take the rest when I want when there is a space to take them. Bollocks to this "pick when you want your holidays or we'll pick them for you,
and if someone else is wanting the same week as you we'll give you the closest week to it".
Usually ends up a month away from your original request. In our office it all worked well sorting out our hols between ourselves. Now RM have got involved and as usual its gone tits up
Im sure they do it to piss us off.

You may as my branch does have a local agreement to cover A/L.
We use seniority, but if someone does not get there first pick then a tiebreak system comes in to place, which means that person or persons will then be first to sign next year.We also sign for our 2 week pick first(no spliting it up)then the weeks after and finally the odd days.

Re: Annual Leave Criteria
Interested to hear that seniority is alive and well in some offices. Where I work, it only counts for job signings.
We're on a rolling list. Each year you move one place up, until you get to the top. Then you drop to the bottom the following year and work your way back up.
It's a crap system from my point of view. In my opinion, seniority is the fairest way, and I thought that even when I didn't have any! When I started nearly 20 years ago, I accepted as a new starter that I would have my summer holidays in June or September, but it didn't bother me. I was 19 years old with no kids! I'd just about reached the stage where I could get a decent couple of weeks in the summer when they changed it.
And of course, by that time, I'd got kids at school...
The other thing that annoys me with this system is that if someone in a group leaves or moves to another office, their replacement, even if it's a new recruit (ok, so that's not likely these days!) gets put in the vacant slot, rather than putting them at the bottom and moving the time served staff up the list.
I used to have a regular argument with someone who started about ten years after me, but was about 15 years older than me. He always used to say "Why should I have crap holidays just because I've not been here as long as you?". To which I replied, "Why should I have crap holidays when I've been here longer than you?!".
Basically, it's yet one more way Royal Mail has kicked us in the gentleman's area. Any decent firm would reward you for loyalty...

Re: Annual Leave Criteria
i thought in the 2007 agreement there was supposed to be more summer holiday leave for employees,
used to have 8 people in list to pick 2 weeks down list, then up again. but now we have 9 people in the list with new part timers with first pick.
surely that means we have less choice for summer leave, they are not playing ball.
now with odd days owing they say we are not allowed to pick saturdays.its our leave so we should have it when we want it not when they say we can have it.

I think thats right it was done away with in 2000. If you are getting a poor choice because senioroty is being used u should complain to your rep or manager about itI'm SURE there was an agreement about 6/7 years ago that said seniority was NOT to be used for allocation of annual leave

Re: Annual Leave Criteria
i just usually use up some sick to go on holiday with, in my view the system is there to be played and it works out an extra couple of weeks holiday for me a year.

Re: Annual Leave Criteria
where i work we have already put our a/l for next year in. we put four weeks in and that's it. don't usually have any problems with too many people for one week.
i'm usually easy with mine so pick a week for my birthday then a couple of weeks in november and then just cancel as and when required...
