Welfare facilities & Toilets:
Due to the potential for delivery staff to be away from their unit for extended periods of time
it is necessary to ensure there is suitable and sufficient access to welfare facilities particularly
sanitary conveniences. Access to toilets is a human right – doing without is not an option and
where there are no toilets available on the delivery walk or adjacent delivery walks then a
return to the unit is necessary.

Mandatory Contents of Every Walk Log:
Map of the Delivery Route.
Safe Drops described and shown on the map.
Toilet locations described and shown on the map.
The specification for the weight of each pouch, either generic or specific to the Walk.
A description of the method of delivery (eg HCT, cycle, etc) and the acceleration arrangements.
The WPQ 1, 2 and 3 Risk Assessments, identifying all hazards of significance.
Office contact numbers, including emergency numbers.
Guidance to any hard to find locations.
Outputs and advice drawn from the follow-up of previous accidents on the Walk.
"Today’s workplace has become heartless and soulless. Employees are seen as units of labour, automatons, functionaries, objects for achieving designated tasks, and as costs to be minimised."

Agree with what you say, Mclovin and brothermagrew correctly states the ssow but the reality of the situation, certainnly in our office, is that RM are merely paying lip service to the requirements.

The reality of the situation is that the designated conveniances are NOT conveniant at all and if anything you are working your way AWAY from them.

In my experience this is a problem that RM hope will just go away and during the first revision where it was taken into account in our office the nearest conveniance on each walk was merely recorded in the walk log to comply with officialdom. NO WAY were they all, or many of them, practicle. At that time though not many people paid much heed to them because they deemed it possible to get around without their need. As delivery spans get longer though this is certainly not going to be the case.

You are kidding right?, drivers picking you up to go to the toilet lol, Loucky in my office if they deliver bags on time and pick up non-del packets. Drivers in my opinion have it very easy and are ussually finished well before me and others.
I wonder... Why can't Royal Mail have some vans fitted with a portable loo, and that way a driver wouldn't have to go out of there way and drive you back to the sorting orifice.

Having said that, I can well believe in dohnut's argument that some drivers are more than likely to have already finished their duties. Still, it shouldn't stop a manager from sending out a van fitted with one of these thingies to allow you to get on with your business, so to speak. :Very Happy

Only done it once in 3.5 years ( touch wood ), but generally your guts and your bladder can learn when they have to shut tight, and when they can relax - even on different walks, my bladder will wait till I'm 5 mins away from a specific bush, before it tells me I need a pish

a ledgendary story about a guy in our office who was caught short on his round so he climbed into a big skip to take a dump. Thought he had got away with it until a double decker bus pulled up alongside full of school children ! :left:

I'm fortunate to have a van (at the minute) and several public toilets close by, so I don't have a problem (that and I can hold on for hours if necessary  ).

Not according to Mrs DG

I had a delivery on which there was a Residential Care Home for the Elderly, one morning I was absolutely bursting, it was a cold frosty morning and I had never had to use the "facilities" before because I actually lived within about 10 minutes walk - anyway I rush into the toilet undoing my flies and getting ready, close the door and bingo the place is in pitch black, I couldn't even see the toilet, so 1 handed for obvious reasons I'm searching along the wall for the light switch and feel a pull cord but the light didn't come on, so I crack the door a little bit to get my bearings and start to relieve myself - in crashes this lady red faced and flustered - it was the warden, the pull cord was actually an emergency pull switch and I'd got her out of bed ................... oh yes that was one embarrassing moment - more especially so because it was a very very cold day :whistle

Don't do what I did, and take a large packet of sultanas on your walk with you. Sure its a healthy option, but not until near the end of my walk that day did I find out that sultanas can actually be a really useful laxative. Boy did I speed up towards the end that day.

That function was never a problem because I was out delivering by 6.45 and back at the depot by 9, breakfast, break, sorting, out on 2nd delivery, home by 12. There was more sorting then, less mail and of course a 6 day week, every week. Saturdays single delivery due mail only home by 9.30. I can appreciate that the longer more conventional day would pose a problem - might I suggest bumhuggers, recommended by another poster, and that isn't an invitation for a date :chuckle

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
