Image So let me get this straight! When in the eighties, loony labour councils stopped Physical Education in schools because a single pupil who did not like phys.ed. would feel some sort of emotional trauma, the rest of the class could not take part in physical activity because that child would feel slighted? Is that not PC gone mad? Do we not now have a generation of obese adults as a result? Was there an element of non competition also, again because a single child could not deal with it, the whole school could not compete? WTF!!!!!!!! Are we as trade unionists not competing with the Deadly Duo, and is our competitiveness not what makes us take a stand against our common enemy? Whas it not PC when labour councils banned the flying of the Union Jack during the first Gulf War? Now do my eyes and ears deceive me, but has not GORDY asked us to embrace the 'U J' as a symbol of our Britishness. Talk about a 'u' turn. Are Labour now promoting PHYSED, am I right in thinking that Boxing is now being promoted as a sport by LIEBOUR because it engenders fitness and self discipline? Is not boxing the sport that the medical profession tried to ban? Did that make me a bigot when I objected to my son not being allowed to engage in PHYS ED or not be allowed to compete? Am I a creep when I felt my skin crawl at the banning of the 'U J' ? Cuz if I am, what does that now make Gordy? Don't try to make me out to be a bigot, racesist or whatever when I know that there are social issues around the whole PC scene that are being ignored and will enventually have to be addressed and we, the man/woman in the street are already paying the price. It doesn't matter how far back you can trace your ancestry, the colour of your skin or your religion. It is the manner in which you live your own life, the manner in which you treat others, the fact you uphold the law, are truthful and honest.

There is no excuse for terrorism, racism or prejudice for whatever reason - be it economic, sexual or bigotry.

Very well said mate. Inststead of saying 'I know this is not politically correct, but...' and being very truthful with themselves and saying "I'm thick. I have very low self esteem and have to have a pop at people with higher aspirations than I do instead of blaming the scum who set worker against worker." I might have some sympathy for them. But they don't, so they are creeps and cranks.

Not a fan of the Labour Party, so just as soon as you let us know which particular Labour Councils did these things, with the relevant references in either text or websites, I would be very interested in checking them up for myself. Othewise this comes down to hearsay which might be alright in The Sun or Daily Mail, but without references is nothing more than a crock of s**t.

:no no Don't read The sun or the daily mail, don't normally respond to name calling, I left that in the playground a long time ago, but as I'm the one who wrote a 'crock of s**t', I assume I'm the one who is 'terminally thick'. If that's your case, are you so arrogant in your politics that anyone who has a different view or opinion of yourself is 'terminally thick? I lived through the eighties as a parent who had to deal with the fallout of the PC crap, including refusing to allow my son to attend classes of 'other' religions except that of his own. As for being terminally thick, I'm here for the same reason as yourself attempting to motivate my fellow workers to stand together and face a common enemy, only I'm not attempting to hijack the site for my own political ends as you and one or two others appear to be doing. -----------KAWAKImage

You have to admit, there is plenty of s**t when it comes down to some of these cases we hear about which never seem to be backed up by anything more than hearsay. A few years ago it was "no one is allowed to say 'accident blackspot' anymore." No one knew, or if they did, they didn't say, where this originated. Last Christmas it was The Sun on it's front page telling us councils were banning Christmas lights in city centres. Needless to say, they didn't name any council where they were being banned and they certainly weren't banned in any town or city I heard about. There was more s**t on display during the World Cup when a car showroom was asked by some quango to take it's Englang flags down in case Muslims were offended. Muslims weren't offended and wrote a statement to the local paper saying so.
As for hijacking the site for political ends, I'm not a member of any political party so will leave the hijacking to those with a political agenda. I have my views on political parties which I express, but as for politics and politicians, I don't trust them. I don't recall calling you terminally thick, and I suggest you re-read the posting where I used the term and see exactly who it was aimed at.

The poltics in this country now is such that you just have 2 big parties dominating that are not in fact that far apart.
The days of the far left and right are over. Many of the left have attached themselves to causes such as anti-war, anti-capitalist, climate change.
It seems the business to be in these days is a human rights lawyer or a climate change expert! Money to be made there.
I saw that programme about where we are from and though it was funny to see some of the reactions, I think most people know that if you go back far enough you will find someone from another country.
I still believe immigration is a major issue. It effects so many areas, education, housing, health, etc..
Look at the recent publicity involving Margaret Hodge and the immigrant housing figures. She was slated until it emerged she was in fact correct.
If you would have an open door policy on immigration, in doing so you risk everything.
I think most people have no problem with immigration as long as it is correctly controlled. You have to accept that you have to change and fit in to this country and it`s ways rather than expect it to change to accomodate yours.
Going back to the work thing I know from some I work with that they wish things like the draw groups were never created, they can actually create division where none actually existed.

From my reading of history (which is done as an interest, not because I was ever bright enough to go to college) they've never been that far apart. They're both there to uphold the present system which only tolerated the growth of Labour at the start of the last century because revolutionary socialism was becoming a possibility around Europe.

I think you have a point although I also think the causes you mention are seen as causes the left have historically taken up going back to the unemployment marches in the 1930s and CND in the late 1950s early 1960s. There certainly does seem to be a reaction against party politics (which personally I don't think is a bad thing.

strangler wrote: I still believe immigration is a major issue. It effects so many areas, education, housing, health, etc..
There is no doubt immigration is a major issue, but it was seen as such going back to the early 1900s when Jews arrived here escaping the pogroms in Poland. There's nothing new under the sun. As for housing, councils have mostly sold off their housing stock to housing associations and have given up building houses for tennants, That is a major cause of the lack of affordable housing. Councils would have sold that property regardless the immigration policy of the government. Education - well the Labour Party told us all it would not abolish good schools in its 1997 Manifesto. It then proceeded to close five schools in my town. They say they have done this because of falling rolls as the population is declining. Health - they have closed down seven out of eight wards at our hospital. My wife now has to travel to the next town or give up nursing. Were it not for doctors from Spain and India and nurses from the Philippines and Ireland, the job could not be done.
I've got more in common with the Irish family down the street who bother no one and work for a living than I have with some manager who by an accident of birth comes from the same city as me.

The thing is TBT the labour party has moved so far to the centre of politics that it technically becomes the same as the old liberal party. I was a member of the labour party until the start of the dispute. In the old days the LABOUR MOVEMENT (not party) would have had the country on it's knees already if the likes of leighton and crozier were bullying us into accepting their dross. Now they just stand back and watch.

Blair is on record as saying he regrets the split between Labour and the Liberals back in the early 1900s. He must be aware that had the Liberals looked after the interests of the working class, the Trade Union movement would have had no need to form a new political party. What Blair and those like him really regret is ordinary working people standing up for themselves to get better pay and conditions. I also agree with you about the lack of solidarity within the labour movement. When the miners were out, it was TGWU members driving scab coal up and down the motorways to power stations, it was NACODs, the pit deputies in charge of H&S in the pits who carried on working and enabled scab coal to be dug and it was Ray Link and his fellow strike breakers who continued working in the Notts area, (but it should be remembered than many Notts miners refused to work). Labour has not removed any anti-union legislation put in by Tebbit and Thatcher which is one reason why many people such as yourself have left. John McDonnell reckons membership is now around 130,000 people who are up to date with membership payments. I'm waiting to see this pamphlet Mara Exall and Peter Keenlyside have written for the CWU on why we should maintain the link with the Labour Party. I can't imagine how they can defend it in the light of the last ten years.
