That is a crass and completely unfair attack on all CWU members. I was deeply offended by that when I read it but let it go. Re: What type of postie are you?
I had hoped that the moderator's intervention on this thread would put an end to the attacks, but hey.
And where exactly did I suggest that, in your words, 'CWU members in the workplace bully and threaten non-members to join' ?
Compare the following, if you will:
Ok, look, in order to list dvbuk55's replies above, I had to speed-read through the whole thread. And after doing that I did not feel as upset as I thought I would. I have probably been treated fairly by most choosing to reply to me, considering that not many agreed with me. Also, if I had the time, I could have answered more of the positive replies that I got. I even think that at one point there was something like mutual respect between you and I! It was just dvbuk55's antagonism that I let get to me, yet even after reading all of his contributions I now feel less harshly treated than I did before. Overall, I'm not too disappointed by the reception my views got, but I still feel that a good few posties here do not like to believe that not all posties think along the lines of the CWU, and so prefer to paint me as some kind of fraud. And to prevent any more attacks, I will refrain from e-x-p-a-n-d-i-n-g on my points of view, which you are sore from reading.
Lastly,
If you read my comment there, what I say is that 'I hope that this online community DOES NOT exhibit the general behaviour of CWU members'.. I think you have looked at that comment in the wrong way, because it is not a criticism of the CWU in any way, rather I am hoping that the reaction of some members of this board to my views does not typify or represent the general treatment of prospective members by the CWU and its existing members, as I'm very sure it doesn't.opgpat wrote:That is a crass and completely unfair attack on all CWU members. C'mon peejay, be honest here, and before you start screaming this isn't a criticism for once, how long did it take you to type something like this? Re: What type of postie are you?
The focus did not need to turn on me, however I felt that to make such points as I have on here, I would need to try hard to explain myself and to convince you lot of my authenticity. I was proved right, after all, since hardly anyone on here has empathised with my position, and instead scrutinised me to the point of snapping. I thought that people might understand the position I found myself in, and that was being left standing in the office while everyone else walked out, and asking myself if I should follow the herd, questioning what type of postie I really was, facing questions that till that point I had found no time to properly consider. With no-one to talk to in the office (how would the strikers react to my uncertainty, during the strike? And how could I be seen by the strikers talking to the manager in secret?), I came on here looking for some answers and direction at a real turning-point in my career - would I be a striker, or a worker; a stark and immediate choice! I am not steeped in Royal Mail history, having come to the company only 18 months ago from a different background in the private sector. I was and still am sure that there were and still are many other posties in my position, but just not on here seemingly, or at least none as brave or foolish as I am to talk openly and honestly about the difficulties and doubts I had over the industrial action. I sought to hear the story from the picket line, I tried to raise a response from the convinced majority, but few were prepared to invest much time in my problems perhaps because it was so outside their sphere of CWU sympathy. And in the end, despite giving it a real go, I am leaving with my tail between my legs.

Postie or not
Unfortunately when we become involved in strike action I cannot see how anyone can sit on the fence as you have to support one side or the other. The important thing to remember is that unless you are planning to join the management sector of the business you will be working with your colleagues well after the strike is over. On that basis i would not want to be the only one left in the office so I would support my colleagues and go on strike.
Peejay if you wanted to hear the true story from the picket line then the simple solution was to join it and learn first hand.
You say you have no one to talk to in your office. I actually find that a rather sad statement
Finally you often talk about your job in RM as your career. I suppose as it depends on your point of view but to be honest other than the management side I ve done all the jobs in my office over the past 20 years and hand on heart I could not call it a career. It’s just a job which pays the bills and keeps a roof over my head and that’s all I see it as, plain and simple.
If your looking for a career with the prospect to improving yourself (running for cover
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Re: What type of postie are you?
Correction: I had no-one to talk to about going on strike (just think of the trouble I would have caused, based on the reaction of most members on here to my views), apart from that I'll talk to just about anyone and share a laugh, however I am the quiet head-down sort of a guy normally, not on a par with some of the 'loud-mouths' who take most of the responsibility for keeping the office a vibrant and jovial place to work. I agree with you, that most of the posties who have lasted the years in our office are of a certain breed, generally quite out-spoken, always game for a laugh, and quite inconsiderate in who they choose to wind up - all in a spirit of camaraderie, until a manager reminds them of what they should and shouldn't be doing.krussel wrote:You say you have no one to talk to in your office.
You seriously think that I would want to become someone so reviled in the office as a manager
Fear of colleagues? Not a strong enough reason to get off the fence; fear does not sway me. But rather than discount the majority decision to strike, I have really let the proposition of 'strike or don't strike' test me. I am looking at the positions taken by both company and employees, and I'm still trying to work out where I belong, even if I belong in the job at all? I am taking this seriously (maybe too seriously by dvbuk55's standards, see his criticisms above), because I do wish to make a career out of working for Royal Mail. And though, as you see it, there are limited opportunities to make a career with this company as long as you remain a postie, the way I see it, if the job does not change to suit my expectations then I will find a way of making it happen beyond any limitations that may be stopping the job from moving with the times. Because as I've already said in this thread, if the job does not move with the times, then it will be left behind.krussel wrote:The important thing to remember is that unless you are planning to join the management sector of the business you will be working with your colleagues well after the strike is over. I believe that if you want a career then you make one, and if this is the right job for me (you know that as soon as you wake up in the morning, depending on whether you are still motivated by the challenges of the job) then I will find a way of bringing change about that will keep the job future-proof. I will engage with my employer and strive to bring new ideas and ways to modernise the job forward, I will fight any signs of decay (is this an ad for a mouthwash ?!) for as long as I still believe in the job and what it achieves. I will fight to make the company keep me, I refuse to become redundant to the general public as long as Royal Mail has a service to offer. Yet, if the gloom and doom merchants are proven correct, and it is too late for invention and ingenuity to save the job, that redundancies are on the cards and the management are overseeing the slow euthanasia of the company, then I may well out-grow the job, despite my best efforts to make it work. I won't stand around and watch my chosen career dissipate before my eyes. When the ship is sinking, rearranging the deckchairs will bring temporary relief, but a freshening wind may find hope on the horizon.
I do ask myself if the up-and-coming generations will long suffer the institution that is the Royal Mail, and if the Royal Mail hasn't a serious image problem as well as its in-house problems, which have contributed of-late to the perception and image of the company that the public has. And in a way, being still young myself, within the institution I could be considered to be in the up-and-coming generation of posties, who will need to be ready for change, who are already facing change so early in their careers, and on whose ability to adapt the future of the Royal Mail may depend.

There is no place for people in the 'modern world' - not free, thinking, self-realised self-respecting human beings. You are an immiserated serf, appetitive, craven, fearful, traitorous - without any grasp of history and the larger political stories which inform our position. You are cudgelled. And like good uncle Tom you love your oppressor. You cling to their knees and look up and grin your s**t-eating grin and say "thank you, master."Yahoorsur wrote:There is no place for people in the 'modern world' - not free, thinking, self-realised self-respecting human beings.
