"Period of calm over" - Secret postal union document renews Christmas strike threat

London postal shop stewards are circulating a document to its members that renews the threat of Christmas strikes.
The document, seen by The London Daily News, tells members that the 'period of calm' agreement has been "reneged on" by the Royal Mail.
Postal chiefs promised "exceptional efforts" to agree on job numbers - but Communication Workers' Union shop stewards are telling it's people that their bosses still want posties to work more hours for less money.
It throws into doubt yesterday's news that the initial agreement guaranteed Christmas deliveries and that the Royal Mail will "agree change and that workers will get real benefits from the modernisation of the business".
That agreement came just hours before 120,000 posties were due to start another 24-hour stoppage after a series of crippling strikes that saw a backlog of five million items.
According to sources close to the Union, a new wave of strikes will be set "within weeks."
"Trust remains an issue"
Dave Ward, CWU deputy general secretary had said:
"Trust remains an issue between the union and the company but the introduction of an independent chair to continue the negotiations and fortnightly reviews will mean that nobody can walk away from this agreement."
The national ballot and all local ballots remain in place.
There are fears that the strike action could push small and medium sized business over the edge as many struggle to survive in the recession.
The renewed escalation is part of the fight for the soul of Royal Mail as management desperately try to modernise the loss making service - recently online book retailer Amazon said it was cancelling its service worth £25m. It was RM's second biggest contract.

Re: Period of calm over - Secret postal union document
why has this not been publisied by the cwu, if it's true that talks are not going as planned and RM are being dishonest to what they agreed in the intrim agreement then reps and members have the right to be told.
.Can we see this secret document??

I get the feeling it's not an official CWU document.
More likely generated by members than HQ but it is just my opinion.

Re: Period of calm over - Secret postal union document
Wow really! Royal Mail reneging on an interim agreement - now who on earth could have guessed that
Well apart from the 120,000 of us who went on strike - NOT the leadership then, NOT the PEC and where are all those who trumpeted a triumph?
Spoke to a manager today who had been at the meeting yesterday and I just happened to mention that we needed to sort a problem with staffing levels - and his reply "Well we can discuss it" - and I said discussing it is not an agreement and he said "well what do you call agreement" and I said "when we each have input and reach an amicable solution" - and he said - well he didn't actually say anything, he smiled at me like I was a simpleton and shook his head.
I am so glad we have reached this new plateau of understanding.

Re: Period of calm over - Secret postal union document
the agreement is clear , what should be happening is a return to pre executive action and resourcing meetings to agree staffing levels.
it is Royal Mail who are 100% in the wrong and should be exposed by our headquarters and the TUC

Sorry Rogue, but to me the agreement is anything BUT clear. RM has agreed to 'review' the EA - whatever that means...

Re: Period of calm over - Secret postal union document
It's not just London, there is no change in the attitudes of local management in Wales either. Still the same old lines "3.5 hours delivery span does not exist", "I'm the manager, you do as I say, and if I say you can't cut off that means you can't cut off", "you must finish your walk it's in the flexibility agreement and you got paid £400 for that", "door to door's are a separate payment do them in your own time", "if you do not complete your pay will be docked as your not hitting our targets". All these quotes I have heard since Monday. So much for building trust. So much for a new start in relations between the union and the management. I wonder if Mr Higson knows that the lowest levels of management are undermining the agreement he signed or is he instructing them to just string it out till after Christmas. Only he knows, but I have my suspicions.

The date on that article doesnt seem to tally with the rest of the article when you read it through, therefore Im treating this article with much caution.
