My D.O is at some point going to be a trial office for the ILSM at the mail centre, only problem is the date keeps getting put back more and more.
The trial is for 4 weeks and is we are told purley to make sure the machine is working and can do what it says on the label.
The latest reason we were given in wtll was royal mail have not got the right software for the right machines. Of course this type of situation can be used to by MP's to say the Hooper report recomendation of a partnership is essential.
Looking forward to seeing the reality of WS mail with my own eyes

Trials in Portsmouth lasted for 3 days.
The Courier will announce that a rural office of 15 in Catshagger , Scotumshire trialled the new sequencing machines and that they all loved them and also love the new start times and their Royal Mail new ties. It will go on to quote how they wish the machines had also been joined by Starburst and more D2D's , as their customers keep asking for more of them.
This will of course be accompanied by the usual Benneton style photograph of multi racial harmony all smiling all wearing over ironed clothing whilst proudly displaying their Royal Mail I.D's and all the while wearing their High Viz vests indoors!.

Re: Walk sequencing - any 1 do it ??
The walk sequencing machines work fine. They stick the standard letters in the right order if your A + is up to date.
You will however only save 5-10 mins prep per walk
Yes your inward sorting goes up a lot because the sequencing machines are fed walksorted mail and their tolerance level is much lower,so at best add 5mins to your sorting.
Then best case scenario is you are left with total saving of 5mins on prep per walk. Now this is the simple bit. Purely on time alone ,prep save 5mins,walk sequencing add -3-4 runs ,loading ,transport ,2 men one costly piece of kit and extra network connections

Re: Walk sequencing - any 1 do it ??
Most here miss one very important point, namely CSS machines aren't just about doing the work more efficiently or more quickly, but that any passing untrained P/T school mum can press the start button and load mail, and that's the Big Advantage over having F/T experienced posties sorting it (from RM's perspective).
Any automated process inherently involves deskilling the work-force with consequential savings; Portsmouth Dockyard's wooden sailblock production line in the 1800s to Henry Ford's production lines for the Model T in the 1920s and a million more, they've all replaced the traditional skills with machine production.
As Bell says, the machines work fine. The problem is having managers with nous to integrate them into the so-called Pipeline to get the most benefit.

Forgot to say that the trial consisted of only 25 walks.Dushku2309 wrote:Balderdash My Boy, Balderdash!!pickaname wrote:

I havent a clue what would have happened if they attempted to sequence all 110 or so walks.
It was obvious the machines were too slow as the mail goes through thrice but they trialed it anyway.
Its a real shame these machines dont get the mail out in good time as i hate sorting and any time saved would mean i could do something else.

You also forgot to say that a certain late shift manager didn't make a start on the walk sequencing due to too much mail on lates, and the situation wasn't helped by PO taking diversions on those days.Forgot to say that the trial consisted of only 25 walks.

So, here we go again-

Is far from what actually happened, but keep saying it anyway if it gives you some sort of comfort....

We have mech managers? The rumour in our office is that its all done by trained monkeys. Although judging by the size of some of my mech bundles they have the Gorilla from the Cadbury's advert banding them up in Swindon MC. Bloody huge some of 'em.Tman wrote: although you could be a man about it and just ask the mech managers.....?

The new sequencing machines process walksorted mail only. Sequencing of the mail is an additional mech process on top of walk sorting. It does not reduce the amount of inward sorting undertaken by experienced F/T posties . In fact ,due to the lower tolerance levels of the sequencing machines compared to the walk sorting machines, much of the walksorted mail processed by them is rejected . You end up with the peculiar RM logic of processing the mail once then feeding it into a new machine that rejects a large percentage of the mail which is then packed into mixed trays. Anyone working in a trail area DO will recognise the result ,a very big increase in then number of trays requiring inward sorting but each composed of only 5-6 walks mail. Hence much more inward sorting.

Re: Walk sequencing - any 1 do it ??
We never really get any walk sorted mail at Christmas. The seqencing for us is not even in dicussion yet. It was just another lie told to us to try and smooth over the changes. Were thinkin its gonna be about about dinner time before we get out of the office at Christmas with about 2 hours left for delivery once weve sorted and prepped.postmanx wrote:yes this is true at our office - NO walk sequencing for Xmasdarude wrote:Heard sometime back, walk sequencing is going to be suspended over the x-mas period.Something like from the second week in December.Anyone else heard of this?
