Courier firm cashes in on disruption caused by postal strike

Rivals to the Royal Mail in Birmingham and Coventry are cashing in on the disruption caused by the postal strikes.

Courier firm Cycle 4 U has won contracts from businesses in Birmingham to deliver their post, while in Coventry Yellow Jersey Post has picked up work from National Express and Bupa.

In cities across Britain local firms exasperated by the recent wave of Royal Mail strikes are turning to private couriers to ensure vital deliveries are made.

Both Coventry Jersey Post and Cycle 4 U offer a cheaper, more environmentally friendly service using electric scooters and bicycles.

Cycle 4 U was granted a letter delivery licence four months ago and charges 32 per item - 7p less than a Royal Mail first class stamp.

Its founder, Steve Young, said its two largest business clients had committed to staying with them “long term”.

Yellow Jersery Post also charges 32p per item and guarantees delivery of a letter anywhere in Coventry the next day. Its couriers are distinctive riding around the city on yellow Dutch-style Bakfiets cargo bikes.

Postcomm, the industry regulator, has granted 10 licences this year - twice as many as in 2008.

The Communications Workers’ Union last week called off two days of strikes after talks with Royal Mail, but a resolution to the conflict remains a long way off.

In the interests of research I tried to see how their service compares with RMs, by phoning one of them up earier today.....what follows is a transcript.....

Ring ring....ring ring.....ring.."Hello, I saw the article about your delivery service and I'd like to know how much for a registered letter from BR8 ( Swanley, Kent ) to TR14 ( Cambourne, Cornwall )? What time is delivery gauranteed? When will I get the POD?...hmmm.....uh-ha.....right.....is "Get f*cked", "no chance in hell" and "you f*cking loony" your final answers?....hello?.....hellooo?.....are you still there?"
