I have watched Bob Crow, many times and at the TUC. My Point was, he is much better at getting his point over than Billy Or Dave.
He is always prepared and seems to always have an answer for nearly anything that's thrown at him and most importantly of all,
he seems to have a pair of BALL'S. :left:

You're spot on in that sense , even railwaymen that call Bob Crow fit to burn , say he does not p*** about , the strikes he calls are right and usually he wins . It's a bit easier to win them as the companies would get fined by the regulator but even so he's a better operator than Billy & Dave .

It would be a lot better if the CWU disaffiliated from New Labour , some people would say where do you go but the RMT seem to do OK .

What happened with the railway was that people were tired of the " corrupt " right wing old guard " - some would include the late Jimmy Knapp in it , some would say that was unfair as Jimmy had a vicious Tory Government to fight - Maybe that scenario will come after June 2010 ?

The best one with Crow was that time he was attacked with the iron bars by thugs , even people that weren't in his fan club were amazed by his nerve to say it was hired management thugs or ASLEF ? - I couldn't visualize Billy or Dave doing that ?

I was impressed by most of his dealings with London Transport and yes what you see is what you get ? - could anyone imagine Billy on a picket line ?
 If Billy came to a picket line--it would be to eat all the pies.

I would be happy to see an amalgamation or association but not a division - there has been too much of the divide and conquer scenario orchestrated by RM in local agreements that has weakened our position. Any move to poach members by the RMT or for personal decisions to move over to them by individuals would severely weaken our position to the point where we would be helpless. If we cannot get 100% support for our votes and industrial actions now - imagine it when members of two unions are getting different messages from different sources.

All the critics of our present union leaders and the agreement (as yet incomplete) that we have, should work to make it work and not start screaming "sell out" and " surrender" at the first opportunity. I thought my friends and colleagues on here were made of sterner stuff than that.

Bob Crow likes playing with train sets - I happen to like Postman Pat - if comes near my toys I'll tell him to f**k off.

You should do the same. Our Union is the CWU - We make it what it is and we elect it's officials. We deal with the aftermath.

TIME TO GET TO WORK.
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile

Do you know how many times I have heard that our union is blah blah blah - we elect the same officials because they are the ONLY choice and of the 120000 members how many actually vote - they all piss up our back because they are secure in the knowledge that come the election they will be voted back in by a third of the union because there are no other candidates. Most local union branchs are run on a mafia basis - our branch in particular has meetings as far as 40 miles away from our office and even if anyone wanted to go there isn't any notification - in fact it may be suggested the branch chair uses the farthest point to boost his mileage claim. What should happen from Monday is that a vote of no confidence in the local reps would be the start of a grass roots rebellion, maybe then there would be change.

I apologise for the negativity t4l and you are right I seldom let things through to the inner core. This time however I feel betrayed by a union I have supported loyally for the last twenty years, striking and picketing in equal measure in all actions - but 2007 was a let down and I felt sure that those lessons would be well and truly learnt - unfortunately that trust has proved to be unfounded. TBH I feel as disappointed in myself as I do the outcome of this action for allowing myself to be so gullible as to believe the union leadership are anything but posturing buffoons. I've said it often enough I should have believed it.

We should have a union history thread on this site.

That all depends on those who are opposed to the decision of the PEC and the officers of the CWU to stand up and be counted rather than just sniping away in the background and never putting themselves in a position to change things.

Lots of hot air from the anti everything camp year after year agreement after agreement but any action?

Perhaps 2010 will be the year the critics grow some bollocks and seek nomination to the PEC/NEC and if there any rule changes to be made that make it easier for them to do then lets see HQ propose/suupport such a thing.

Thats quite true. Too many people waiting for someone else to do something for them. Time to put words into action and take personal responsibility

I go to a supermarket to buy groceries/fruit/vegetables - I do not can anything, I do not grow anything if I am not satisfied with what I receive or any service I pay for I complain - I do not buy a shop, a field or an orchard or open a bank, or organise a satellite to get the picture I require - if I pay for something I expect to get it, the CWU isn't a free service it's a paid for service - In the same way I would change supermarket, bank, tv provider I reserve the right to complain and change the provider - if I can't find like for like I do without.

What I wouldn't do is kiss backside like some on here.

We should have a union history thread on this site.
The Union of Communication Workers was a trade union in the United Kingdom for workers in the post office and telecommunications industries. It was founded in 1919 as the Union of Post Office Workers by the merger of the Postmen's Federation, Postal and Telegraph Clerks' Association and the Fawcett Association. It achieved official recognition, and as a result, in 1920 the London Postal Porters' Association, Central London Postmen's Association, Tracers' Association, Tube Staff Association, Messengers' Association and Sorters' Association all merged with it. Its longest strike was for 7 weeks in 1971

It changed its name in 1980, and merged with the National Communications Union in 1995 to form the Communication Workers' Union.

i got a feeling i read somewhere that the CWU is the only union that RM will recognise. would explain why you cant have any other form of representation bar a CWU rep or work college at a hearing. don't know how that would pan out if all the members moved union though. does anybody else? would they then be forced to recognise another union?
