Re: Communication Workers Union sabotages postal strike
The leadership have done exactly why they started would be done when certain conditions were met. Only time will tell if that was the right or wrong policy, untill then we can only make educate guesses and hope for the best.
Stop bashing them and concentrate on policy suggestions for conference to consider. Make it in the rule book how far advanced talks and agreements have to be to call off stikes if your not happy with the concept of PEC deciding.
I think we should start allowing motions from individual mbrs as well as branches/regions to go to conference.
How about a 50/50 split?

Well I voted yes - but I don't see what was promised do you? What I do see is a joint statement on looking into the future. You see for me there is no closure here. We knew from day 1 what we wanted, you lay it on the table and don't move until what you want is conceded. In the DVD Dave Ward said that the company could afford the changes of a 5 day week etc. Here we have the classic JAM TOMORROW syndrome and it just will not do.
As for a re-organising of the union - I'm all for that, perhaps we could save money by cutting away a lot of the dead wood and stopping funds to the labour party, cut out the support for various campaigns that have nothing to do with the CWU and look at how many are employed at HQ, their functions, salary, perks etc. Then we need to look at how much money is dispersed to Branch and how it is spent. So I'm all for a clear out root and branch if you'll pardon the pun.

Re: Communication Workers Union sabotages postal strike
The problem is big daz, RM are not meeting any conditions as far as i can see they are telling us they will talk
As for this or probably any other trade union being democratic ,thats simply their not!! Last december we were due to strike over the closure of our MC(SK) RM were doing this by E/A and were coming out with statements like "we no longer negotiate with you but we will consult with you"
A ballot was organised and returned a 77% yes vote, eight hours before the action was due to start the MCM calls me and the area rep into the office to inform us the strike was off! Martin Collins and some other jokers from HQ had decided withdraw action without even speaking to our branch sec or our divisional rep, they then waited nearly two weeks before they offered an explanation
We were striking to try and make RM enter into proper negotiations regarding the closure of our MC but those fools in London decided unilaterally to withdraw authorisation for strike. After two weeks we attended another meeting with the MCM and guess what the first words out off his mouth were??? "we no longer negotiate with you but we will consult with" So forgive me big daz if i have little confidence in HQ hopefully they will prove me wrong

Re: Communication Workers Union sabotages postal strike
My point has been missed and that is that Dave and company laid out the conditions upon which strikes would not happen/be called off/suspended, now putting aside if those conditions were right or wrong and I accept most on here would use the wrong bracket, RM do appear to have met those conditions.
The conditions were not a full blown resolution ready to be put to a vote, if that was the condition then we would not not be debating right now but preparing for the picket line in the morning!!!
Dave and the PEC belive RM met thier criteria so suspended the strikes for two weeks, if RM in two weeks time are not meeting their end of the bargain then Dave and co must do what they say they will do in that situation and take us out again.
So the question is were the conditions set too low?
I would say they are borderline, but on the right side of the border and im prepared to give Dave and the gang a chance as the ballot is still live and RM have only a mere two weeks to get their act together.

Re: Communication Workers Union sabotages postal strike
I think most would agree that the conditions are well below what was required. I must stress that having read the agreement if the management were trust worthy it would be a good agreement but as most of us know they will interperate how they want
I personally think Dave Ward has handled himself and this dispute quite well so far and i hope he sees it through
I also think it vital that we get across to our members that this dispute is on going.
Do you think that if RM does not scale down these outhouses immediately and return all mails back to their proper offices that would be a justification for returning to national I/A? Personally i do

Good point about RM and trust, that is why RML have only two weeks to play ball followed by two week reviews untill this all done and dusted and voted in.
As for the outhouse question , if they have not returned mail by the end of two weeks then yes I belive the agreement is perfectley clear enough for that to justify all out!!
Pbor Mail center im told are now keeping their mail and its no longer being sent to the raunds outhouse anymore, however the issue of the casuals remains to be resolved. As we are now in monday morning , i belive Dave Ward has casuals on his agenda for today.

What i didnt like was when the news was announced that the strike was off the presenter on the radio show i was listening too said Dave Ward was laughing & joking with people outside TUC Congress House before he gave his official statement. I didnt like this one bit - it shows a lack of professionalism in my opinion.

Does this mean that if in my area or any other that HQ has seems to have ignored for 18 Months, puts in a complaint that nothing has changed The Two will call us all out or will we, as we have seen from this last fiasco have to wait till it goes tits up in London.I do not mean any disrespect to the London guys and girls with my last remarks, only that we have been going through this s**t for nearly two years and The Two didn't seem to give a toss.My area Rep and Branch Sec have been pulling thier teeth out trying to get something done about what's happening in our area, and as they have said to me on many occasions, it was just falling on deaf ears.

If no resolution can be reached then that is what should happen basedon my understanding of the agreement, otherwise they are in clear breach of their obligations to the membership.

NO!!!
Encouraged to resolve the dispute through talking YES!!
A quick browse through Hansard will show HH and co as being on the record in saying they are in touch with both sides and trying to get them to resolve their difference through talking and not striking.

Unless you saw it you can't know what the context was so it might have been unprofessional but maybe not. Don't believe everything you hear or see via the media.Destroyer wrote:What i didnt like was when the news was announced that the strike was off the presenter on the radio show i was listening too said Dave Ward was laughing & joking with people outside TUC Congress House before he gave his official statement.

Re: Communication Workers Union sabotages postal strike
The problem is Royal Mail has 4-5 weeks to fritter away talking and then can tell us to go take a hike. Xmas advantage over. Restart the strikes!
