peejay14 wrote:I intend now to take my job a lot more seriously. Till now I have just kept my head down and delivered mail, now I want to know just in what direction the company is taking its posties. What little I know just now will suffice to get me by day-to-day, but my question now is what future is there for us posties? Since I cannot see the job I do today still being around in 10 years time, I shall be asking those in charge just what I can expect from my employer in the years to come. As a business, the company requires to generate work, but what work will we be doing in the not-too-distant future? I need an idea of just how the future is shaping up for us, and what plans the top-brass have for the company going forward. I don't mean the gloom-and-doom news of the changes that will occur in order to get us there, I am more interested in the vision that our leaders have for the future of the business. Surely they must have one, and a positive one. And not only do I want to be a part of that future, I would like to contribute in my own small way to making the plan that will get us there.
I am starting to sound somewhat anti-union, although let me assure you that I did not start out that way when I first joined this board a few weeks ago. I haven't fully convinced myself either that I am fully anti-union, as I have not really thoroughly assessed the place that unions have in the machinations of a company, and I'm sure that there are a great number of pro-union people that I could learn a lot from. However, it is my opinion that the action taken by the CWU over the past three weeks has held the company back and may even have stinted its growth and hampered the plans it had going forward. (I do wonder if I am using company-like slogans here (as someone has already 'accused' me of), but then perhaps this is just the easiest sort of language to use). And again, like the company brochures tell us, probably like me it sees a place for a union that will work along-side the company and help take it forward, maybe even in the form of an interface between the company and its most important asset - its staff, especially if communication between company and staff breaks-down.
I guess that my view of the recent industrial action is that on the whole both sides will live to regret it. I do not think that anyone can sensibly say that it was not destructive both to the company and the work it tries to generate for us. There must be problems, otherwise there would have been no cause for strike action, but for me striking was far from the best option to deal with the problems. No doubt some of you will still say that I have no grasp of the real problems nor a sense of the real difficulties, but in a sense if I don't then I still do not think that such knowledge would help me in my cause, as those are really just technical matters that require good and proper management and nothing more. What I am more interested in is (after overcoming the problematic technical and operational aspects of the job that are holding everybody back): where are the solutions to the crisis taking us? Because in order to go somewhere, there has to be somewhere to go to; in other words, is there a place for us in the future?
I think by throwing myself into the deep end on here, I have learned more about the kind of postie I am, and more about the kind of postie I want to become. I've had, and still have, a lot to say, and it's not all been easy reading I know (as some of your replies haven't been either). If I do not find enough people willing to come-and-go with me on here, then I will probably quickly broaden my search for answers to encompass other sources of information. That would be a pity though, because on here I'm sure there are a lot of sensible posties from whom I could yet still learn a thing or two to help me on my way. Though be glad perhaps that I will not continue to conduct my search via such self-indulgent posts as this. I will more likely, as some of you have also requested of me, try to put my points more directly.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the box ( I'm still smarter than the average manager though - phew! ), but has anyone else noticed peejay's style of posting has changed? Granted that could be down to being more direct, but isn't it odd his grammer and syntax has altered as well? Has the IP addy changed - or is it same IP, different user?
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?

The style does sound a bit like The Courier ?
It might be a student or post grad , they'll be used to having to write 2000 - 4000 or whatever words on a subject when sometimes it would normally be impossible to do so - so to spin something out you use 4 words when 1 word would suffice . I'm told that one trick is to use a Thesaurus or just labour points and waffle hence the verbosity
Wind - up ?

Me too - what a week !
Maybe that's why my 'style' has altered, and why I'm letting dvbuk55 get to me.
Take a hint, please, my fellow postie, because as the saying goes: If you haven't got anything nice to say...
I'll try to be more believable from now on, everyone, though hopefully without having to change what I actually believe.
If you like, I could put up a picture of myself in uniform and tell the world where I work. Or I could just remain anonymous. I get by without knowing those details of others on the board, and frankly I don't think it's necessary to know, I just take you all at screen-value. There is this inherent problem with chat sites; if you don't sound believable, then you probably are not.
I know that I am not saying what many of you want to read, and that leads to doubt as to whether I am truly a postie. But surely it is reasonable to assume that we don't (even as posties) all think alike?

Re: What type of postie are you?
TBH, I like getting in to work 30 mins early, have a look at what's in ( especially if I'm on the 8:30am start ), make a brew, roll a fag and smoke it......roll another and smoke that, and maybe a third as well.....then I look at my watch, see I'm five minutes late, shrug my shoulders and finish my fag before I slope back inside

Re: What type of postie are you?
the spoof one on here was hilarious - " I wish I was allowed to deliver 10 Door to Dustbins per household every day " , " My customers always ask me if they can have more of those informative leaflets "Coops wrote:Peejay does sound very The Courier,I love the letters from knobs who brag about coming in early etc as it allows them more time to go fishing or whatever
The guy was right , some of them are like something out of " Letterbocks " in " Viz " comic's heyday , the skit they do on the tabloid's letters to the editor pages and the " Top Tips " they have in " The Weekly News " and women's supermarket magazines like " Bella " & " Take a Break " .
Is Peejay going to do a blog on the internet , a sort of pro RM version of " Over - worked & underpaid " or " Roy Mayall " ?

Re: What type of postie are you?
Well, I have learned a lot from this thread, it has been very interesting to see just how other posties react to my thoughts about work. I think that ultimately the thread has failed however, because it has deteriorated into a pattern of attack and defence. I don't regret the exercise, rather I now am a little more self-aware as a postie, and actually more confident that I can make something of my career.
I don't think that many who are attacking this thread can genuinely have a clear conscience when they complain about bully tactics by the company. It looks from this thread that it is only human nature. It's not all a bed of roses for me at work either, but if anything the unrest at work over the last month has made me stronger and given me more belief in myself.

I hope they make you work all those 5 minutes back. And i'm not sure bragging about smoking so much is going to feel too clever when you end up with some horrible disease.smokerjim wrote:TBH, I like getting in to work 30 mins early, have a look at what's in ( especially if I'm on the 8:30am start ), make a brew, roll a fag and smoke it......roll another and smoke that, and maybe a third as well.....then I look at my watch, see I'm five minutes late, shrug my shoulders and finish my fag before I slope back inside

Another dozen like you in the office and he could sack two of your colleagues, and still manage the workload.
Never mind that though, you're okay, aren't you ..........
