I tried to read it, but my eyes kept skipping off the page, like they knew I only have another 40 odd years on this earth, and I couldn't waste the 5 mins to read peejay's post ( I know I'm verbose & procrastinate, but I'm not in his league! )BELIAL wrote:Skip

Not often I speak up for peejay but I have started printing his missives onto hard copy, not too hard mind, then when I go for a crap I have something worthy of being flushed down the bog.

I intend now to take my job a lot more seriously. Till now I have just kept my head down and delivered mail, now I want to know just in what direction the company is taking its posties. What little I know just now will suffice to get me by day-to-day, but my question now is what future is there for us posties? Since I cannot see the job I do today still being around in 10 years time, I shall be asking those in charge just what I can expect from my employer in the years to come. As a business, the company requires to generate work, but what work will we be doing in the not-too-distant future? I need an idea of just how the future is shaping up for us, and what plans the top-brass have for the company going forward. I don't mean the gloom-and-doom news of the changes that will occur in order to get us there, I am more interested in the vision that our leaders have for the future of the business. Surely they must have one, and a positive one. And not only do I want to be a part of that future, I would like to contribute in my own small way to making the plan that will get us there.
I am starting to sound somewhat anti-union, although let me assure you that I did not start out that way when I first joined this board a few weeks ago. I haven't fully convinced myself either that I am fully anti-union, as I have not really thoroughly assessed the place that unions have in the machinations of a company, and I'm sure that there are a great number of pro-union people that I could learn a lot from. However, it is my opinion that the action taken by the CWU over the past three weeks has held the company back and may even have stinted its growth and hampered the plans it had going forward. (I do wonder if I am using company-like slogans here (as someone has already 'accused' me of), but then perhaps this is just the easiest sort of language to use). And again, like the company brochures tell us, probably like me it sees a place for a union that will work along-side the company and help take it forward, maybe even in the form of an interface between the company and its most important asset - its staff, especially if communication between company and staff breaks-down.
I guess that my view of the recent industrial action is that on the whole both sides will live to regret it. I do not think that anyone can sensibly say that it was not destructive both to the company and the work it tries to generate for us. There must be problems, otherwise there would have been no cause for strike action, but for me striking was far from the best option to deal with the problems. No doubt some of you will still say that I have no grasp of the real problems nor a sense of the real difficulties, but in a sense if I don't then I still do not think that such knowledge would help me in my cause, as those are really just technical matters that require good and proper management and nothing more. What I am more interested in is (after overcoming the problematic technical and operational aspects of the job that are holding everybody back): where are the solutions to the crisis taking us? Because in order to go somewhere, there has to be somewhere to go to; in other words, is there a place for us in the future?
I think by throwing myself into the deep end on here, I have learned more about the kind of postie I am, and more about the kind of postie I want to become. I've had, and still have, a lot to say, and it's not all been easy reading I know (as some of your replies haven't been either). If I do not find enough people willing to come-and-go with me on here, then I will probably quickly broaden my search for answers to encompass other sources of information. That would be a pity though, because on here I'm sure there are a lot of sensible posties from whom I could yet still learn a thing or two to help me on my way. Though be glad perhaps that I will not continue to conduct my search via such self-indulgent posts as this. I will more likely, as some of you have also requested of me, try to put my points more directly.

Re: What type of postie are you?
For anyone concenrned about how little time they have left on Earth and the GROWING length of PJ's posts I've selected an important point he wants to make re: IA.
mmm hampered their plans - now to us that's a good thing but to the likes of PJ everything the company does is gold plated!
PJ here's some background reading suggestions for you regarding who acts in the companys best interest and RM plans for 'going forward'.
Look up the crippling RM pension fund blackhole and find out who created it.
Look up what small buisnesses will have to pay for 9am delivery in the future and tell us that's good for our buisness.
Check out what RM are doing with later and later deliveries and tell us that's what domestic customers want.
Ask your workmates how much their overall 'standard of delivery' has improved since they have had 8bags to deliver in 3 1/2 hrs.
Ask your domestic customers if they are happy with the service they get from RM.
Ask them if they want a different postie every other week who's a temp or casual or agency.
Ask rural customers if they are happy to pay for a delivery or else collect their mail from the nearest/not so near PO.
This could go on and on for a while PJ. The fact is, this Royal Mail management team are running the crucial service we provide into the ground in order to maximise bottom line profits. You seem to be under the misapprehension that they are acting for the benifit of the company and it's customers.
You can't fault that observation - although apparently it's his opinion.peejay14 wrote: it is my opinion that the action taken by the CWU over the past three weeks has held the company back and may even have stinted its growth and hampered the plans it had going forward.

The other way is take a question , take it to bits and answering it by putting it back together again
The best example as how to do things is Fozziebear - use Powerpoint style bullet points and talk around them a bit , put gaps in between the sentences for impact & clarity .
I'm sorry but it sounds like a " analysis " that goes in circles or trying too hard to be fair . I'm sorry if this sounds too hard but .........

Yep ! - get the profits up " coincidentally " ready for privatization and / or run things down so much so privatization becomes " attractive " .opgpat wrote:For anyone concenrned about how little time they have left on Earth and the GROWING length of PJ's posts I've selected an important point he wants to make re: IA.

The mistake some people make is giving managers of all levels far , far too much credit . You can dress things up with Corporate B/S & buzzwords but the reality is a lot more simple than people think .
The idea is to cut through the B/S . Gordon Brown's Stakeholder Executive tasked the likes of Crozier to increase the value of part or wholly owned Government companies - there's ways of doing it , the other question begged is why increase the value of these companies ?

1. What is Royal Mail vision - We would all like to know that but they won't tell us.
2. What will the Unions position be in this vision - see above - but whatever happens they are our collective bargaining tool and will be here to say - RM want a sweet Union that won't strike (CMA ?) and pass on decisions rather than be an integral part of them. Unfortunately RMs personnel management style is completely wrong for this set up and therefore until RM actually start doing the right things instead of just saying the right things we will always be here.
The rest of your post, was frankly self indulgent bordering on naive. You apparently believe everything RM tell you, and I am afraid that even with people who do the same with the CWU, I feel sorry for them. Royal Mail and the CWU will only tell you.
A. What they want you to hear.
B. What they think you want hear.
No one should take anyone at face value, especially large organisations, make up your own mind from a variety of sources of information and never rely on source who ever or whatever it is.

Re: What type of postie are you?
If you want to carry on a pointless slagging match, then keep going as you are going. It says something about you that some people find unpleasant, that you enjoy picking on people and that you are a BULLY, no worse, an online BULLY, hiding behind his computer.dvbuk55 wrote:Tut tut peebrain, don't tell me you have had enough criticism of your painfully overlong, verbose opinions. Ok, so you think I am talking crap, but why seek satisfaction from repeating your point? If you can't criticise constructively then learn from some of the other replies. Bullies need attention and like to be seen by others to be taking the upper hand in a situation that makes them look good.
I like working in my office, because my DOM does not tolerate bullying. I hope this board is equally against bullying, and that if you do not desist then the manager of the board will take a stand and protect me from your harassment.
I think you are intelligent, don't resort to these dirty tactics. It should not be tolerated and should not represent the achievement of this board, which is to invite anyone with a view on the Royal Mail to join in. To Royal Mail employees, this board can be an escape from a stressful work place where there is no time to get things off their chest or try-out their thoughts on work-related issues. Aren't you trying to deter me from doing just that?
