Royal Mail Dispute - Further Announcement of Strike Action

Due to the fact that Royal Mail are refusing to negotiate with the Union and have instead re-affirmed their position to press on regardless and impose major change without agreement - the Postal Executive have today agreed a further 24 hour strike.

Full details of the strike are attached to this announcement. This includes details of the strike covering members in POL Supply Chain (Cash in Transit and Cash Centres).

In announcing further strike action, the Union has also today written to Allan Leighton offering him the opportunity to avoid next week's planned action by engaging in meaningful negotiations.

A copy of the letter to Allan Leighton is also attached.

This announcement will be distributed to all work places as soon as possible in order to demonstrate how reasonable the Union continues to be. It is important we explain to members that although Royal Mail consistently repeat their offer to explain their position - they point blank refuse to negotiate a settlement.

A further letter will be sent to members' home addresses in due course.

Dear Allan

Your public refusal to engage in fresh negotiations leaves the Union no alternative other than to announce further strike action.

The CWU agree modernisation is essential. But are you aware your Senior Management Team have never tabled a single proposal to the Union for the introduction of new automation?

There is a simple solution. Royal Mail must return to the approach agreed in 2006. This means change can be introduced in a way that genuinely benefits customers, the workforce and the company.

To demonstrate our commitment to achieving a settlement I am making yet another fresh offer. The next strike can be avoided if you agree to engage in meaningful negotiations covering the following strands.

Modernising the company and improving efficiency by taking the workforce with us.

Delivering on our commitment to permanently raise the value and status of postal workers' jobs.

Agreeing a resolution to pension issues.

Working together to face up to the challenges of competition.
If you agree to immediate negotiations covering the aforementioned and set aside planned executive action, I will recommend to my Executive the withdrawal of the next planned strike.

However, if you simply restate your previous position - that you will only meet to explain the challenges facing the business - then a further strike will take place.

This latest offer from CWU is a genuine attempt to move things forward.

I look forward to your positive response.

Yours sincerely

Dave Ward

Deputy General Secretary (P)

Details of the next 24 Hour Strike

Following a meeting of the Postal Executive Council this afternoon (5th July 2007) the following industrial action has been endorsed:

1. That all Royal Mail Letters employees except members in Northern Ireland, will take a 24 hour strike on Thursday 12th July for all shifts commencing from 7 p.m. up to and including 7.00 p.m. on Friday 13th July. This will cover all duties, scheduled attendance and overtime.

2. All members in POL Supply Chain (Cash in Transit and Cash Centres) except members in Northern Ireland, will also take part in a 24 hour strike from Thursday 12th July for all duties that commence from 7.00 p.m. and for all following shifts over that 24 hour period up to and including 7pm on Friday 13th July. This will cover all duties, scheduled attendance and overtime.

Our members in Northern Ireland are not included in this industrial action due to the Bank Holiday.

Further information will follow regarding industrial action in Northern Ireland .

Please, Please don't break the strike. None of us can really afford to have a days pay docked but if we start drifting back the strike will drag on.
Think about it, they will start being able to cover jobs if we start to drift back. What with super sweaty posties running around like knobs trying to make a name for themselves and a drop in the mail over the summer period, they will lapse jobs and the only losers will be the guys that are out on the line fighting for everyones job.
Solidarity is needed.
Go and cut a hedge or lawn for someone you will soon earn your days pay back

Post by dongash »

at our office the dum has put a flipchart by the exit asking people to break the strike! it assures people that royal mail will safeguard them and they don't have to work at this office, they can go elsewhere or to a mail centre! it also says that action (including dismissal) will be taken against any person(s) who intimidate anybody wishing to work! ............... I HAD TO LAUGH, THERES A PRINTOUT NEXT TO IT ABOUT JOB LOSSES AT IKEA!!!!! as the ikea job losses are all managerial somebody has wrote across it "these are all managers jobs, your next!" i suppose these job losses are our fault to mr leighton???
