Simple questions:

1) Why have we just striked?

2) Why are the strikes now off - there is no agreement in the dispute?

Unless the CWU answer some pretty straightforward questions, you can bet membership will be dropping by the tens of thousands pretty damn soon.

I agree, Dave has been exceptional in his support so if he is happy this must be the start of the begining for us. Sure RM can back track but from what he just said-

1)RM will now NOT sideline the union and modernisation will again be by consultation not executive action.

2)There is now an oppertunity for both sides to negotiate with the government to have the pension black-hole paid off. If that is done without privitisation that would be huge.

3)ACAS PLUS an independant body will now be involved in future negotiations and decisions.


I THINK THAT IS A BLOODY GOOD POSITION FOR US. IT IS NOT AN AGREEMENT BUT IT PUTS THE CWU IN THE DRIVING SEAT SO LONG AS RM DON'T GO BACK ON THEIR WORD.

Look its nothing like 2007 this is an interim agreement which allows for local discussions on impostion overseen by an independent party aproved by acas. It alllows for negotations on all the big issues which incudes pay , shorter working week , d2d , spans , mail centres network and job sercurity. We still have both the national and the local ballots in place. Progress will be reviewed every 2 weeks and the deal should be completed by December.

It is an interim deal but it is Royal Mail who have blinked. We have to now see whether what they agree on paper they will carry out in deeds. But if they dont we can still take action . In no way has the union agreed to allowing Royal Mail to string us along past Christmas. If they are not serious then action will be taken by late November.

Now the agreement will be published at Mid-day tomorrow. I suggust people wait until they see the words before being negative.

There'll be many more like me and I can tell you now - I won't be striking again - I'll walk past a picket line with my head held high, knowing it isn't me who lets people down but the CWU Executive.

I pay my union fees and my union represents me.If tomorrow we were called ouy on indefinite strike I would be on the picket line every day until.Tomorrow we go back to work and that's fine.We have taken the first steps on a long road.To all the negative posters and all those thinking of cancelling their CWU membership I ask -is it not better we walk that road with the CWU on board? And if you all know so much better why were you not in there negotiating on our behalf.If Dave is happy with the deal then so am I.

Higson now said on sky news "royal mail pension cannot and will not form any part of the agreement"

The postal strikes have been called off until at least the New Year to allow for fresh talks between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said the decision had been made to provide "a period of calm" in which the two sides could reach a long-term deal.

As a result, he said Royal Mail deliveries would be "free of any disruption" over Christmas.

Yet Mr Barber added that securing a final deal remained a long way away.

The industrial dispute has been over the level of job losses the Royal Mail says are necessary as part of its modernisation plans.

While the CWU accepts that some redundancies are required, the two sides disagree over their extent.

They also disagree over changes to pay and working conditions for Royal Mail staff that remain in their jobs.

"The agreement reached today is a very important step forward, but it is a long way to the end of the road," said Mr Barber.

He added that both Royal Mail and the CWU recognised that trust between the two sides had to be improved.

If this interim agreement does not include the suspension of all lapsing/absorbing, the closure of the outhouses, a commitment to go to acas and an immediate and indepedant review into the bullying and harrasment then the CWU hierachy should resign!!!
