Advert aimed at postal workers panned by union

AN advert addressed to striking postal workers is a massive waste of money, according to unions, who have dismissed the move as a publicity stunt.

The full page ad by the Royal Mail has appeared in national and local newspapers across the country — including the Evening Post today — and calls on striking staff to return to work.

It follows the distribution of leaflets by mail bosses locally, including at their sorting office in Llansamlet, in which the strike is described as "barmy", and which calls on workers to call off their action in order to safeguard the business's future.

Les Evans, secretary of the Communication Workers Union's South Wales regional branch, said: "It is difficult to understand why they are spending what is probably hundreds and thousands of pounds nationally on these adverts. It is a massive amount of money.

"Is it really aimed at our members or for the public?

"If it is aimed at smaller businesses and the public, then what they have already seen from the Royal Mail's modernisation plans is higher stamp prices, fewer collections and later and later deliveries.

"I don't think people will be fooled by the ad. They do not see the public service they have run down.

"It is desperation from the Royal Mail. But unfair working conditions have pushed workers over the edge."

Postal workers across South Wales have joined the industrial action taking place across the UK over recent weeks, with more strikes expected.

They are angry over the Royal Mail's modernisation plans, which they say will lead to staff cuts and unfair working conditions.

The Royal Mail was unavailable to comment on the issue last night.
