A draft deal has been agreed to end a series of long-running postal worker strikes that threatened to derail Christmas deliveries.

Union sources suggested a deal was "on the table" but had yet to be officially signed.

The Communications Workers' Union declined to comment on rumours that a draft deal had been agreed between the negotiators, confirming only that the postal executive will meet later to decide the next move.

Officials from the Communication Workers Union have held several meetings with Royal Mail bosses in recent weeks to break the deadlocked row over jobs, pay and modernisation.

Two waves of national strikes have been held and further 24-hour walk-outs were planned for tomorrow and next Monday involving 121,000 workers, threatening huge disruption to mail deliveries.

The union's postal executive will meet this afternoon to consider any progress made during the talks, which have been held under the chairmanship of TUC general secretary Brendan Barber.

Neither side has made any comment about the negotiations.

The strikes led to a backlog of more than 50 million letters last weekend, although that was cut to five million yesterday

Just overheard on the Beeb it's more a deal to suspend action to facilitate further discussion rather than a deal on any of the issues per se.

Is it possible to call off tomorrows strike given the short notice? What if you have not seen the news and just assume we are still on strike?Is the DOM going to phone everyone tonight?
