one day you might just need the help of a union and because off your inherant distrust you will not have the strength a union could give in your hour of need but there again you don't deserve to have support do you
Like i said, i wont need the union, its a job, if i ever get to the stage where i need to union to sort something for me, i will know its time for me to walk away. Ive had problems in my office, and ive communicated with management to get the problems solved, and so far, they have been solved to my satisfaction. Maybe im lucky, maybe i just know what im expected to do, and what im intitled to do. I, unlike many of the union members in my office, will not be walked over. I do what im expected to do, and nothing more. Ive never worked more than 15 minutes past my time in RM, and never will. Your problem shouldn't be with strikebreakers, it should be with the people in the union, who vote yes, then stand on the picket line for 30 mins, or the people who vote yes and do 4 hours of overtime on monday so they will be finished by 11:30 on tuesday. Maybe your problem should be with the union members who use their cars?or the ones who come in 45 minutes before their start time, and finish late. Your problem shouldn't be with the strike breakers, it should be with the ones forcing you to strike, mainly your own members.

I can only speak of my experience. But i have the hardest duty in my office. Without a doubt. I stream my mail nearly everyday, because i do the job properly. I have 3 full times who work around me all of whom prep up their duties quicker than they should, and leave early, usually very early, before i start. Yet they are always still in the office when i get back, on time. They are your problem, if they did the job properly, that would be another full time job between them. Yet they strike when summoned and work overtime to make up for their losses. I enjoy my job, mainly because i get to laugh at them in the moring. Some moan at me for streaming, and i say to them, what time did u start your duty, and what time did you finish, then followed by did u claim overtime for going over? They soon shut up.

Your second point however is a great point. (if your theory wasn't wrong). In my office, id say 90 percent of the strikers, have no real qualifications and/or have been in this job for decades. The strikers really have no other option but to strike, quite frankly, they cant really do any other job with the same wages, and i appreciate that, thats why i dont complain, they feel they need to strike, they have no other option. However someone with different circumstances who didn't even get to vote on the matter shouldn't be intimitated into striking.
I took this job because of the good wages and because i couldn't go down my chosen career path. I am well qualified and experienced in several roles, and to be honest i could probably find another job within a month, just not on the same wages as i am now.
superiority complex perhaps ?
if indeed you are so well qualified , surely you would be able to find a job that pays a lot better than your current one :hmmmm maybe something that could make good use of your people skills !

Not that its relevant, but for 22.5 hours and getting nearly 200 quid a week, at this moment in time i couldn't get a job for nearly 10 quid an hour. I worked in IT before, where i earnt alot more than 200 quid a week, but i was working 40 hours a week and didn't enjoy the job. Im basically a fully qualified electrician, but i just need a few documents that need verified in order for me to be a qualified electrician, where i could expect to earn 15+ an hour. However im in no rush because i wouldn't like the long hours, and i enjoy the work i do at the moment and the fresh air.

Steven I'm a bit confused -in an earlier post about the Motorola Outhouse you claimed you worked at that location, but in this post you talk about union members in your office -as we all know the outhouse only employs Manpower people.

You seem to have an extensive knowledge of people who use their cars?or the ones who come in 45 minutes before their start time, and finish late
But as you work at the outhouse you should only be sorting xmas pressure mail -so let me get this right are you out on the streets delivering mail? or are you sorting other Mail centres mail ?

chances are you wouldn't get a job as an electrician at present as we know the building industry is hardly flat out . i'm also qualified in other work but still at present continue to work for royal fail my choice but still belive that no man is an island and would in no uncertain terms cross a picket line or not be part of the union it has other benifits other than industrial realitions issues. quite obvious you have a total disregard for your fellow workers and as far as i'm concerned say they are treated with disdain by you .

As an apprentice, it is very very hard to get work, you are right, but even in this downturn, there is a massive shortfall of fully qualified electricians, i would be confident of getting a company to hire me on an apprentice wage for a few months, then them gaining a fully qualified electrician. Like i said before, i have never crossed a picket line, and never will...thats one of my main points on my personal stance not to strike. To be honest, i do alot for my fellow workers, im always polite and try to help as much as possible, nothing major, but i certainly am not resentful to them or anything along those lines. And like i also said before, maybe for you the union offers something more than IA, but for me it doesn't.

People need to realise that not everyone who comes on this forum with a different view is a troll.

We were read out the RM propaganda in a briefing today, and when asked 'do you know why you are striking', about 90% of the staff sat there with a blank look. All they know is what's been on the news, the CWU is lucky so many staff are willing to strike despite having no problems with what they are asked to do.

Which is why in 2 years time, people who are still here will have to do this all over again. Its the minorirty that really want a strike, its the majority who just go along with it or dont want to cross a picket.

I am striking because I am in the union and the majority voted for it.That is democracy and that is what being in a union is all about.I actually feel sorry for the 20% or so that work for RM but feel no affiliation or comradeship with their fellow workers.I am striking because I know exactly what conditions we would be working under if the union is side tracked and they do whatever they want.

p.s. stephenc- my brother is on a £60K job with niceic so maybe you could tell me what qualifications you are waiting for and I may get you some advice to help you on your way.
No offence.

I agree 100% that stike breakers are less of a problem thenthe members cutting corners and racking up overtime to clear backlog.

I only support the strikes because Royal Mail have not neen listening to the realities of life at the front end.

There are better alternatives but as Steven says the problem IS the union membership
