I believe in my employer, that they are fighting to maintain the business, and I want to be part of that fight. I want to fight WITH the company, not against it.

So, finally, after 9 pages you have revealed yourself to us. You came on here to talk down the cwu and our strike action and you fully support the companies position. Why didn't you say that from the off?

You have been decietful from your first post on here. Your sudden change of heart from being unsure to fully supporting RM and even using their terminology 'going the extra mile' is about as subtle as a barn door.

I think he is either a new postie with a hatred of unions or more likely with that use of 'extra-mile' a newish manager. Either way he's abused our trust.

9. I'd guess these were the items to prioritise if time was short or mail was heavy?
10. The folder on the frame containing useful information for the postie

2, maybe 3, out of 10. Think I failed. What's your point?

Our DOM, indeed everybody in the office, including the union rep, still refers to starburst. I saw the word 'lapsing' used in another thread, and guessed it was another word for 'starburst'.

My point is that although as you claim to be new so I would not expect you to know all of the questions you would simply have to ask any senior member of staff in a real delivery office to get most answers . I could not see this being much of a problem as you appear to me someone who enjoys interaction immensely and has plenty of time to compose such detailed long posts. That is of course if you did in fact work in a mail room (your words) at all.
I find it difficult to believe that any Postie would not know about SA or pressure overtime.

To be honest I really cant make you out and I hope that my assumptions are correct. If in fact you are a real postie I shudder at your total naivety towards Royal Mail to the point that you are willing to work for free. This of course would be extremely damaging to fellow staff who expect to be paid for their labours.

Starbursting was totally different to lapsing and quickly proved un-workable.

Anyway I think I ve proved my point with the questions and your lack of resources to produce the answers.

So i wish you farewell my friend as i really cannot stand to read one of your long posts again.

Best of luck :wave :wave

Okay as other true Posties will read this post and want to know the answers.

1. Correct P739 or docket is a sorry you were out card
2. 552 was a form prepared by PHG’s which you signed to authorise your overtime
3. 318 is ? Could be “a was” now? A form listing a complete break down and description of your duty
4. Any postie knows this = scheduled attendance describing pre arranged overtime
5. SA is overtime that is pre arranged and paid at a slightly higher rate, pressure is not and paid slightly less.
6. The slang term “sweat” is to return un delivered mail back to the office (wilful delay).
7. Opps I missed that one.
8. A real old one this. Rebate was “junk mail” before mailsort arrived.
9. A good guess Peejay. The first and dated shout was always welcome on the second delivery as it meant you could leave mailsort and prepaid mails behind.
10. Yep I will give you this one. It is a folder which contains a list of your delivery points, a map, hazards, dogs and special instructions.

There's nothing wrong with being prepared to work with the company, even in time of industrial action.

But please note that I do not support either side's arguments, I just think that the only way forward is hard work and teamwork. I was not ready to strike, but I was ready to listen and learn. I am, I am, I am a postie. Any suggestion that I am not is just pointless speculation. You should take people at their word, even though you do not like what they are saying.

This thread has been a trial, some have given me the benefit of the doubt, some have held fire, and some have found me inexplicably guilty. That I dare not reveal who I am and where I work, is a sad state of affairs, and my treatment by not a few on here may justify my reluctance. I hope that this online community does not exhibit the general behaviour of CWU members towards prospective members who remain unpersuaded, like me; as pointed out by some level headed posters in this thread, who could understand where my views come from, I may one day find my reasons to go on strike.

Guilty of deceit, my @rse!

Now at long last we can all get back to doing what we do best.

Let's hope the common sense and good will at the top continues to flow, and the agreement to keep moving forward sticks.

Woo hoo! :Applause

There is no place for people in the 'modern world' - not free, thinking, self-realised self-respecting human beings. We are immiserated serfs, appetitive, craven, fearful, traitorous - without any grasp of history and the larger political stories which inform our position. We are cudgelled. And like good uncle tom's we love our oppressors. We cling to their knees and look up and grin our s**t-eating grins and say "thank you, master."

:hmmmm sounds like a couple of folk on here.

I intend now to take my job a lot more seriously. Till now I have just kept my head down and delivered mail, now I want to know just in what direction the company is taking its posties. What little I know just now will suffice to get me by day-to-day, but my question now is what future is there for us posties? Since I cannot see the job I do today still being around in 10 years time, I shall be asking those in charge just what I can expect from my employer in the years to come. As a business, the company requires to generate work, but what work will we be doing in the not-too-distant future? I need an idea of just how the future is shaping up for us, and what plans the top-brass have for the company going forward. I don't mean the gloom-and-doom news of the changes that will occur in order to get us there, I am more interested in the vision that our leaders have for the future of the business. Surely they must have one, and a positive one. And not only do I want to be a part of that future, I would like to contribute in my own small way to making the plan that will get us there.

I am starting to sound somewhat anti-union, although let me assure you that I did not start out that way when I first joined this board a few weeks ago. I haven't fully convinced myself either that I am fully anti-union, as I have not really thoroughly assessed the place that unions have in the machinations of a company, and I'm sure that there are a great number of pro-union people that I could learn a lot from. However, it is my opinion that the action taken by the CWU over the past three weeks has held the company back and may even have stinted its growth and hampered the plans it had going forward. (I do wonder if I am using company-like slogans here (as someone has already 'accused' me of), but then perhaps this is just the easiest sort of language to use). And again, like the company brochures tell us, probably like me it sees a place for a union that will work along-side the company and help take it forward, maybe even in the form of an interface between the company and its most important asset - its staff, especially if communication between company and staff breaks-down.

I guess that my view of the recent industrial action is that on the whole both sides will live to regret it. I do not think that anyone can sensibly say that it was not destructive both to the company and the work it tries to generate for us. There must be problems, otherwise there would have been no cause for strike action, but for me striking was far from the best option to deal with the problems. No doubt some of you will still say that I have no grasp of the real problems nor a sense of the real difficulties, but in a sense if I don't then I still do not think that such knowledge would help me in my cause, as those are really just technical matters that require good and proper management and nothing more. What I am more interested in is (after overcoming the problematic technical and operational aspects of the job that are holding everybody back): where are the solutions to the crisis taking us? Because in order to go somewhere, there has to be somewhere to go to; in other words, is there a place for us in the future?

I think by throwing myself into the deep end on here, I have learned more about the kind of postie I am, and more about the kind of postie I want to become. I've had, and still have, a lot to say, and it's not all been easy reading I know (as some of your replies haven't been either). If I do not find enough people willing to come-and-go with me on here, then I will probably quickly broaden my search for answers to encompass other sources of information. That would be a pity though, because on here I'm sure there are a lot of sensible posties from whom I could yet still learn a thing or two to help me on my way. Though be glad perhaps that I will not continue to conduct my search via such self-indulgent posts as this. I will more likely, as some of you have also requested of me, try to put my points more directly :confused .
