Union leaders must do more to back post strikers

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has put itself in the bizarre position of brokering talks to try and end the dispute.

It is angering many post workers and other trade unionists that the TUC is promoting itself as an arbiter rather than helping to provide solidarity.

The TUC could instead call a demonstration in support of the strikers. It could encourage solidarity marches and meetings at a regional level. But instead it sees its job as doing the bosses and the government’s work for them

Many are wondering what the union leaders are doing for the strike. Are they actively encouraging their members to do collections? Has every union produced and distributed an official collection sheet?

Every trade unionist needs to redouble their efforts to build support for the postal workers – regardless of whether the union leaders step up to the mark or not.

If you guys simply work to rule, you would bring the service to a grinding halt without loss of pay and with no legal threat to your jobs. Just do as you are told by the management - no more, no less.

'Working to rule' can be construed as Industrial Action. Working normally, as Rick says would be pointless and in any case would not bring RM to a tabkle for discussions.

Why the TUC and not ACAS. Is it because any deal struck under the guidance of ACAS would have to be honoured by RM and any deal struck under TUC guidance can be gone back on. I don't know why RM is so against ACAS. Could someone enlighten me?
