THE union leader in charge of solving the postal strike crisis has banned junk mail from his letterbox, despite it making billions for the Royal Mail every year.

Dave Ward, 40, deputy leader of the Communication Workers Union, left posties the clear message not to put any unwanted mail through his door.

A sticker on his letterbox at home says "No junk mail" even though unsolicited leaflets are a key source of income for the Royal Mail.

Without it, up to 40,000 jobs could be on the line. Last night politicians hit out out at Ward, of Tooting, South West London, for giving the wrong message.


Tory MP Adam Holloway said: "Although many people don't like junk mail, it helps keep the Royal Mail going."


Fellow Tory MP Brian Binley said: "This shows how inept some people can be."


The Royal Mail refused to comment about it.

But Noelle McElhatton, editor of Marketing Direct, said: "From July 2008 to June 2009 the top 100 businesses using direct mail spent £1.5billion so it's vital. Continual strikes will see them go elsewhere."

The industrial action could cost the British economy £1.5billion. Both sides meet again today in a bid to find a solution before stoppages on Friday and next Monday.

The walkouts are not even backed by Ward's own postie. CWU member Michelle Stevens, 42, delivered letters last Thursday but hung up her post bag on Saturday.

She said: "I'm only striking because if you don't, workmates treat you like ****."

Meanwhile, Royal Mail chief exec Adam Crozier was named as the second highest-paid public sector worker.

He raked in £995,000 in pay and benefits in the year to April. Crozier, 45, was beaten by Channel 4 programmes chief Kevin Lygo on £1.136million, says ITV's Tonight, on at 8 this evening.

Dave does not live in Tooting. He lives in Chessington. In true Sun style they got the wrong Ward and turned up at the wrong house. This postwomen therefore is not his delivery postperson and as you say is a non member. Yes Dave worked in Tooting delivery office up to 1994 when he became Branch Secretary of the London South West Branch , then regional secretary, divisonal officer , then assistant secretary and the DGSP.

the best one was putting this Muslim Radical Extremist's mobile phone number in The Sun - inviting Sun readers to ring him up . Unfortunately either the Sun printed the wrong number or Sun readers got the number wrong and rang up this lad up in South Wales .

He said he'd had 8 death threats as he was standing at the bus stop going to work by half past seven ! - he had to switch his mobile off soon after . AFAIK there was a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission and The Sun had to pay £3K or more like £8K compensation for " inconvenience & distress incurred "

I think the Sun's Rebakah Wade has been in trouble for putting a sex offender's phone number up too - Ok fine but the problem is when things go wrong . They think everyone is too scared of Rupert Murdoch / James Murdoch - not quite necessarily so

I just added a comment on that story in the Sun, but surprise surprise, it said thank you for comment, subject to review, I bet they don't print it, if they don,'t just proves how biased they are

Still no sign of my comment, have you notice the majority of comments, are all against the union
