Postal dispute: ‘Closer to agreement’

POSTAL workers in Burton and South Derbyshire were today due to strike for the second time in a week.

Burton Mail - Royal MailMail centre delivery and collection staff were today expected to picket outside their offices over modernisation, pay and working conditions. Union bosses representing Burton and Swadlincote have claimed they are “much closer” to reaching an agreement with Royal Mail bosses than when workers struck last week.

But they have warned that deliveries will not return to normal until the middle of next week.

Communication Workers’ Union secretary Simon Walker said: “Thursday’s strike means that a lot of the post that should have got to Burton and Swadlincote’s mail offices wasn’t there.

“Our thoughts are with the people disrupted by what’s happening, but we’re trying to protect the service long-term and stop the deterioration of recent years.

“It’s difficult to say when it’s going to end.”
