I have been involved in union activities for most of my working life and I believe everyone should have a free choice as to whether one works or not through a dispute.
I truly believe that this country needs to have an Essential Services Act to cover all essential services workers.
This would involve some serious legislation being enacted to ensure continuity of all services involved while ensuring a fair outcome for everyone involved. Strikes are futile and only serve to cause disruption to the economy of the country, business, and the individual now manning the picket lines. It would involve an independent panel being set up to deal with grievances from whichever quarter. Decisions would be binding on all and strikes would be outlawed with resulting fines on erring unions. They cannot afford to lose money or members just as management cannot afford to lose custom or money through bad practices on either side.
I have enacted change in my role during my working life albeit on the shop-floor or in management. Practices need to change on both sides of the equasion for the development and growth of the organism. That is how things need to happen! Otherwise the organism will become extinct. How many of you recall the Miners? Everyone lost in that dispute and should serve as a warning.
My view is that you need not be afraid of change in your industry. You do need to be afraid of change not occurring! Embrace it and you too will benefit along with everyone else involved!

OK then we have to change in industry, so us posties then have to work our backsides off to line the pockets of the management & we get no payrise & nothing but s**t all day long, that seems fair, or am I missing something. :hmmmm

You do need to be afraid of change not occurring! Embrace it and you too will benefit along with everyone else involved!
Would that include the benefits that half our workforce would have to claim if Royal Mail have their way?.

"No strike" agreements are a laudable objective as long as they are to everyone's benefit - in return for their commitment to such an arrangement employees must have a set of conditions of employment and a linked wage structure that renders strikes unnecessary, and we are presently several light years from that. We are of course not a monopoly any more and not entirely necessary if you believe Lord Mandelsons spin on things, and as such shouldn't need to be classed as an "essential service", but then, since when were politicians believable?

Strikes are futile and only serve to cause disruption to the economy of the country, business,
That's the Point to bring it to the public's attention and to get management to sit down and discuss what's going on in the business,
Striking is always a last resort and when all else fails a valid one.

You do need to be afraid of change not occurring!
We are not afraid ( Do you actually read these forums :arrrghhh ) we just want it done fairly and with some common sense, to just slash and Burn

Sorry just can't gell these 2 diametrically opposed statements.

How as someone believe the first statement, which I concur with, yet your 2nd statement completely ignores the right of all workers when in dispute to withdraw labour from their employer. Perhaps you could clarify.

Just like Hitler and Franco had! It's called Fascism. I doubt such an act would cover you though.

when i was a new postie i spent 4 months being moved around different walks
even got sent out to other offices so i know how it feels to be dropped in the deep end
with a map like this casual labour.
i can honestly say i never once outperformed the walks regular postman (although i did well considering a few times)
its just not credible. Either they cant be doing a full round or they are having the walks
pre preped by other staff? allowing them to get out of the office earlier.
I'm a postman-and i know where you live.....

I worked for a couple of years for Salstream ( the warehouse and logistics side of Christian Salvesen with the exclusive contract with Marks & Spencers ) the union there was the GMB & they had a no strike agreement in force - I had no fear of that agreement being abused by the management ( M&S have always had a good rep of looking after staff & keeping them happy - and I had no worries that they'd extend it to their suppliers ), the diametrical opposite is true of current management at RM.....if there is a weakness in the workforce's / union's armour, they WILL exploit it at the earliest opportunity for their gain, no matter the cost to others ( look at the fact that RM refused to negotiate until after national strikes were called - and they still had the brass neck to paint the union as the bad guys in the media! ) A no strike agreement is perfectly acceptable to any worker, if the side that gains the advantage of no strikes, concedes the advantage of exploiting the workforce

I would be concerned if someone like you were to create the legislation you outlined to outlaw srike action - in your post, you said...

Nowhere did you mention the role of management ( or in RM's case, HM Government as well ). A disagreement needs two sides to be involved - what sanctions do you expect to be management to be under if they exacerbate or provoke a strike? Who decides who is at fault, Government, CBI, TUC - or an "independant" panel chosen by any or all of the above? For someone that says he has been involved in change at work ( without explicitly saying which side you were on, but leaving the implication hanging that you were doing it for the workers ) you have very little idea of the basics of IR disagreements. ( Sadly the majority of mass media are in the same position )
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?
