Jewellery worth £50k goes missing after being handed over to Royal Mail

JEWELLERY valued at £50,000 has vanished after being handed over to the Royal Mail for delivery.

It is believed 14 packages, worth up to £50,000, were stolen from a van after leaving posh jewellers Hamilton & Inches in Edinburgh.

The plan was to get the items repaired at their London branch.

But somewhere on the journey, the parcels disappeared.

The alarm was finally raised a month later - on October 7 - when staff realised the jewellery hadn't arrived back in Edinburgh. Police are now investigating.

Missing items include an exclusive Cartier Tank watch, worth more than £10,000. The platinum watch is a favourite with Naomi Campbell, Uma Thurman and First Lady Michelle Obama.

One customer, whose limited-edition watch went missing, fumed last night: "It beggars belief that these items can just disappear and the Royal Mail doesn't know where they are.

"Hamilton & Inches have given me a replacement meantime, but I doubt I'll see my own watch again now."

The managing director of Hamilton & Inches, James Fraser, said: "These items appear to have been stolen from the Royal Mail van.

"The 14 packages were signed for by a delivery driver to be sent recorded post and it was after they left our store that they went missing "There is nothing we could have done to prevent this.
As soon as we realised they were missing we contacted police.

"We have set about contacting all the affected customers and have replaced the items as quickly as we possibly could. I can only apologise to them."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We are investigating this matter."

If it was in Edinburgh they need to start looking in a trailer as that is the East Coasts way of ensuring quality of service figures are met and everyone gets a big fat bonus. :chuckle
Now if it had been on the West Coast :shhhhh
Scotland - so many corrupt managers, so few prosecutions.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

surely there was no point in sending them recorded post - special delivery is the way to send things like this.

Surely, the point is that you should be able to send anything of any value via the post?

You're quiet right Jennifer, but we're only human and we do make mistakes.
Surely it's better to protect yourself, and use Special Delivery and the insurance that comes with it.

as dudley says you can, but it is the customers choice to either just bung it in the letter box and hope it makes it there, or use a service specifically designed for the item you are sending. There is a Special Delivery service that covers consequential loss so if it does go missing not only is the item itself covered but any losses (up to a certain value) caused by RM not delivering are also covered.

Assuming the report is correct, under normal circumstances RM wouldn't bother to make enquiries for missing Recordeds.

However, the publicity the problem could generate may prompt someone to call in the IB. Needless to say the police will have a problem understanding our systems so no chance there.

...Hang on a mo, where did you get all that jewelry from, the ones now being displayed in your banner, atop this page? Are you trying to flog off your ill-gotten gains for a quick sale. :chuckle

Hm, that's funny; it was there a moment ago. :hmmmm

Think the Mrs of someone's gonna get a few Joe Blobs - rearrange the letters - over Christmas when they open their presents!
50K? I guess most posties wives will be lucky to get £50 with the strike/low wages we get...
