Ok wolvesboy, how about some advice from a newbie, well 2 years into the job,and my advice is like others have mention on here, is don't used your own car, it is not worth it, let royal mail provide you transport, and if you really want to go ahead, than you don't need our advice, just contact your insurance, but you won't be doing anyone favours, including yourself.

USE A BIKE!!!
Your DOM should be responsible for ensuring that you have all the necessary equipment to do your job properly.
Do what I do, tell your driver where and when you want to be met with your additional bags. Don't take more than 16kg out on your first bag and make sure each additional bag doesn't weigh more than 11kg.
The panniers on your bike should only be used to carry your waterproofs, lunch etc. don't carry mail in them!
If your driver is late meeting you, tough - it's not your problem. If you run out of time, tell your driver to take the rest of the bags back to the office and CUT-OFF.
As has been said, do a row of d2d per day and lay them in with the letters, most of the time you won't notice much difference.
Using your own car is for mugs and runners, don't fall into the trap!!

You feel a little bullied HAH! you don't know the meaning of the word. Just you wait till youv'e been working for RM alittle while then you will understand the word. BIG TIME! If you think a few little words on a forum is bullying youv'e made the wrong job choice.

Where in you contract is it stated "OWNER DRIVER" I have looked at mine and am unable to find these magic words.
You have been specially chosen, you can now join the happy band of other owner drivers and pay more than £1000 a year to tax, fuel, insure and maintain your car. The absolute joy of being able to take all your bulk parcels and extra pouch drops for your user friendly Dom is sheer delight. There is a superb extra bonus; you must spend 15 minutes every day "FLOWER" checking your special status car "FLOWER" Fuel, Lights, Oil, Water, Electrics, Rubber. And remember to keep a log of this to show to your DOM who will present you with a Gold Star, A stylised Star which resembles an ass hole. :arrrghhh :arrrghhh :arrrghhh

(Back from work)

Thanks for the sensible advice to those who did; I appreciate it guys.

As for the comment I quoted; yes I do think ' a few little words on a forum ' is bullying (Probably a separate topic).

As I say I want to use a bike, but the bike I have was woefully inadaquate for this weeks rounds and d2d's. A decent bike with paniers would have done me, but I didn't have one. My car would have been a godsend this week.

[quote="jaja"][quote="wolvesboy84"]Hi,this must have beeen discussed and answered loads of times for new starters, (I've used the search facility, but had no luck).

What insurance do I need to cover my round? I'm a postman, I would like to use my own personal car to cover the lenghty distances between streets and a base for my 'door to doors'.

I have my MOT and driving licence but, the form is puzzling me.

Please can anyone help me?

Thank you in advance,

What a very very stupid question to ask especially at a time like this.

Are you asking this question just to antaganise people or have you not read other posts on the use of private cars.

Just keep to your 3rd party fire and theft insurance and i hope you get a tug by the police and they cube your car.

Listen mate DONT USE YOUR CAR thats how simple it is dont try and justify your claim for using your car as it doesnt wash with us anymore stop being selfish and look at the bigger picture.

I really cant believe you have the balls to ask this question forgive me for asking this question are you actually a postie.

Why didn't you read my post properly?
You don't need panniers, just do the job as I said!!

You shouldn't be using your car on deliveries because the duty should be set up for foot/bike/van and never designed for a car user.

BUT
If you really want a definitive answer on what insurance you need, just phone your insurance company and tell them what your going to be doing and let them advise you on the correct insurance needed.

PS. Make sure you get everything in writing just to get yourself covered.

EDIT AFTER WRITING POST
Thanks for the above post...something like this was what I was looking for

I'm not going to get into a slanging match with the flamers...bullies are people with little man syndrome.

I did read your post properly, but as i said my bike is woefully inadaquate, I just needed advice as a temporary measure (didn't you read my post properly?).

I obviously are not going to get help on here (apart from the couple of guys who tried...thank guys) which is a shame. I've been in the job under a month and I can already see why this company is in such a mess.

And before anyone can put an 'hilairious' avatar or a crap photoshopped picture underneath; no it's not because of people like me, it's because of people stuck in their ways and being unable to see individual circumstances.

Shame.

I don't believe it's possible to have temporary insurance cover for business use, also how long do you envisage using your car for delivery?
Take the advice given here from posties that have been in the job for years. Don't use your car. Today's favour' becomes tomorrows official part of your duty.
Using cars has screwed up alot of offices.

wolvesboy. I'm not having a go , just trying to point you in the right direction :angel .
DON'T DO IT , IT'S NOT WORTH IT !
BECAUSE of people using their own cars , starting before their official start time , rushing round their walk and not taking their break , RM have used this as a reason to remove hours and duties from D.O's all over the country. They use it as a big stick to beat posties DOING THE JOB PROPERLY. Doing the job properly means that you are fully complying with Health and Safety Law and Employment Law . NOT doing the job properly is BREAKING THE LAW !
Starting before your time - you are NOT INSURED to be working before your official start time.
Rushing round your walk - puting your Health and Safety at risk , if you have an accident RM will blame YOU for rushing/cutting corners.
Not taking your break - You are LEGALLY entitled to a break. H&S issue as working without a break can cause fatigue and therefore you are more likely to have an accident.
Using your own car - It's up to RM to get you out to your walk and to provide safe drops for your mail.
Mail security is a big issue here. Would YOUR insurance pay out if your car was broken into and mail stolen ?
Wear & tear on your car - RM will not buy your fuel or tyres. Nor will they pay for damage to your cars suspension when it gets knackered by carrying 100+ kilos of mail every day, and they won't pay for repairs or buy you a new one if your car breaks down due to the additional mileage incurred due to using it for work.
RM won't pay for your insurance to use your own car , that will come out of your own pocket.
Think about it.

Thank you Scottishlass for your eloquant and reasoned arguement: I fully intend to do all this.

Am I barking up the wrong tree with the car buisiness? Should I stamp my feet until I get a decent bike with paniers?

Or is it a bit of a risk for a new starter? :confused

RM should provide you with the necessary equipment to do your job, if they fail to do that then you can't do your job properly.
Bring it to the attention of your DOM and if you get nowhere, have a chat with your local union rep.
I know it may seem risky as you're a new starter, but you'll have the backing from your workmates.

Trust me, if you use your car and, heaven forbid, you had a slight accident, you'd be fooked.
Royal mail won't give two sh*ts about you and will toss you to the preverbial wolves.

What is wrong with your bike? Does it have 2 wheels? Does it have a chain and pedals? Do the brakes work? Has it been serviced in the last year?

Sorry if I sounded a bit terse, but I'm only trying to make you see that, if you do as I advised in my first post, you would make life in RM a lot easier for yourself.

Start as you mean to go on and you reduce the risk of a bad back etc. caused by putting too much mail in a bag because you are using your car and rushing round trying to finish!

I really am only trying to offer good advice here!
