Pay dock warning for postal union leader

THE newly-elected trade union leader of Scunthorpe's 150 postmen and women has been warned his pay will be docked if he breaks off his holidays next week to lead a second 24-hour walkout.

But Alan Dale, 52, a postman for 31 years, said he will lead the pickets around the local depot in Church Lane from 5am onwards on October 31 as planned .

Father-of-two Mr Dale said he normally worked a 40-hour week from Monday to Friday and had booked his holidays a year ago - well before the strikes were planned.

"I have asked the Communication Workers Union (CWU) to legally challenge this. I never work on a Saturday so I am striking in my own time - yet I have been told they will dock my pay if I turn up," he siad.

"It is totally absurd and we believe illegal forfeiture of wages."

Volunteer managers were drafted in yesterday to help deliver the mail as more than 100 postmen and women in Scunthorpe staged the first in a series of 24-hour walkouts.

Union members organised picket lines in Church Lane for five hours from 6am onwards.

Mr Dale said he and his fellow strikers appreciated the support for their dispute from the public.

He said: "People are not easily fooled. They know this has become political.

"We believe the real truth behind this dispute is the Business Secretary Lord Mandelson clearly feels it is pay-back time because the union defeated him over his privatisation plans for the Royal Mail.

"The majority of our members here in Scunthorpe are solid in their opposition to the company's modernisation plans which will mean job losses and we will repeat the 24-hour walkout next Saturday."

By 9am yesterday three mail vans had left the Scunthorpe depot to deliver the mail - but it was not clear how the 24-hour stoppage had impacted on normal deliveries.

A Manchester-based spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said: "We have contingency plans in place to process as much mail as possible today and that includes volunteer managers delivering some mail."

The Royal Mail has declined to discuss the pay deduction threat to the Scunthorpe union leader.

you are entitled to spend your day off or annual leave wherever you like, aslong as your not on their property you have the right to spend your holiday how and where you like and work cant do nothing about it they dont own you.

Officials of the CWU have advised me that you have informed one of your staff that his attendance at the picket line this morning whilst on leave will lead to the loss of a days pay. I am very concerned by this.

Can you confirm whether this is the case and, if so, can you please advise me under what legislation or part of the Royal Mail agreements you are imposing this sanction?

I raised this matter on the floor of the House with the Minister responsible for postal services on the 20 October and he advised me that he was not aware that this was taking place, so any information on this matter would help him as well as myself.

This is the type of petty rubbish posties have to put up with on a daily basis from RM management, as long as the rep does not step on RM property he is free join the picket line.
