Royal Mail uses old Motorola plant as base for casual staff

PREPARATIONS: Royal Mail plan to use the former Motorola plant in Bathgate when they draft in casual workers during the strike

Published Date: 23 October 2009
By SUE GYFORD
THE Royal Mail is taking over the former Motorola factory in Bathgate for use by casual workers, bringing threats from striking staff that they will picket the premises.

The news comes as the Communication Workers Union said it was preparing to strike again next Thursday, Friday and Saturday if the dispute was not resolved.

The Royal Mail insisted that the use of the factory was part of an annual arrangement to cope with the Christmas rush, but said the centre would also be used to clear strike backlog if necessary.

The casual workers will be part of a 30,000-strong contingent recruited across the country to keep the mail moving.

As posties continue the second of two 24-hour strikes today, one of the strikers, Communication Workers Union area processing representative Graham Steedman, warned that the factory would be picketed if the union suspected it was being used to divert work from plants hit by industrial action.

He added: "If they're moving our work from the Edinburgh Mail Centre that could escalate the official dispute. Obviously there would be potential legal challenges to the Royal Mail by the union if they're employing agency and temporary staff to do the work of striking workers."

Preparations at the building off the A7066 are understood to be well underway, although a Royal Mail spokeswoman could not confirm how many casual workers would be employed at the site or when they would start work.

She said: "The people who will be based at Bathgate are being taken on as part of our Christmas recruitment.

"We will use it also, because we're in an industrial action situation, to clear backlog if there is one, but there is nobody there doing the work of normal postmen who are on strike. This is something we do every year."

The Centre for Economics and Business Research today predicted the dispute would cost Scottish firms around £23million a day.

Very glad he's still alive and getting his full pension - pity that todays posties won't be getting the same pension he is and that is just one of the issues we are striking for.

Early November not Mid October - anyway its beside the point. As a Delivery Postman I am confused as too how these out houses (apt name :whistle ) actually help clear a backlog. Are they another link in the pipeline or will they by pass an MC and go straight to DOs. If so then it won't work unless they draft in casuals to them or offer docket and both have potential problems. :hmmmm

Or is it as I suspect a Political move to try and weaken the CWUs position by undermining the Solidarity of striking posties and to make RM look like its doing everything it can to keep mail moving, when the exact opposite is true.

TBH MCs are not an area I have a lot of knowledge about so I may have missed something please jump in and correct me, politely though, if I have.

But he is quite happy to take the pension that the union got him. I think RM managment would have withdrawn completly from the pension by now without union pressure except their own. :cfo :cfo :cfo :cfo

I heard one chap on TV say they had been sorting packets for 8 hrs to various post codes so presumably they would bypass the MC and go direct to the DO which would in some instances surely be work proper to the postman grades on strike.

No you did'nt -this is the first time this gaff has been used & the only other time an oothoose has been used in West Lothian was during the 2007 national strike -when Royal Fail tried to break our strike by hiring workers to work at a empty factory
in Nettlehill Rd ,Houston Indust Estate in Livingston

You may have been working in the Broxburn/Bathgate DO ,which is half a mile away from this NEW oothoose I well remember falling over temp workers last year as you lot sorted the xmas mail

Please dont tell me what i did or didn't do. I never worked in a DO last year, i know the difference between a DO full of normal posties and an old warehouse with only xmas casuals and a few management. When i went there i expected it to be a DO, not just a rented building. I was told it used to be the motorola factory, by a line manager.

All they did there is sort packets and some mail into yorks to be transported to individual DO's, there is no equipment there, nothing. It just full of yorkies in bullrings. so im afraid your wrong about not using an outhouse since 07.
