Royal Mail strikes: Reagan had the solution
Gordon Brown must do what Ronald Reagan did with his air traffic controllers if he wants to save our postal service, says Simon Heffer.

My postman is one of the finest and most obliging men I know, so I hope his future will not be jeopardised by the combination of prehistoric behaviour by the oafs who run his union, and third-rate management by those who try to run the Royal Mail. However, the buck stops with the Prime Minister, since the state owns this important part of our infrastructure. Not to put too fine a point on it, Mr Brown needs to decide whether we want to have a postal system in this country or not. If the latter, then he can let nature take its course, which will be the bankruptcy of the Royal Mail, the loss of tens of thousands of jobs, the loss of a vital public service and a field day for private courier companies and email providers. But if it is to be the former, he must do what Ronald Reagan did with his air traffic controllers: tell those who want to work to go back and do so, and sack those who do not and replace them from the army of unemployed. But Mr Brown doesn't do decisions, so misery it is almost certainly going to be.

err, that would be illegal, and probably wouldn't work. The network would lie in tatters for years after. It would be easier to just dull down the USO if everybody cares that little for a reliable postal service.

Why will these people not accept that the unions are doing what we want and not the other way round? He says what a great chap his postie is but then implies he is so stupid he will strike because a union "oaf" tells him to.

Royal Mail is screwing us and we are rebelling against it.

the hooper report damns the royal mail managers as much as antything else..........mandy said he had no confidence in the top managers so sack them and bring in some who know how to manage and get rid of the cut cut cut policies

I have just been reading the Wikipedia page of this fool's views, and they certainly reflect the stupidity he exposes in his quick-fix, or short-termism views. Makes me wonder what the Telegraph's game is by letting these toss-pots out into the wild.
