Letter to Branches
No. 927/2009 Ref. 60000 Date: 21st October 2009
TO: ALL BRANCHES WITH POSTAL MEMBERS
Dear Colleague
ROYAL MAIL DISPUTE: INDUSTRIAL ACTION
Further intensive talks took place with Royal Mail on Monday and Tuesday of this week, ending late last night.
Whilst progress was made in discussions we remain someway short of agreement. Furthermore, a letter from Royal Mail Managing Director Mark Higson received this morning undermines and contradicts the position of the Royal Mail negotiating team.
In the circumstances, the PEC has concluded that there is little real alternative other than to implement its previous decision and proceed with industrial action on Thursday and Friday of this week as previously notified.
Whilst we also need to plan for further action, it remains our position that the dispute can only be resolved by negotiation. We are therefore seeking further meetings with Royal Mail at the highest level and are restating the previous offer made to Mark Higson regarding third party mediation without pre-conditions, via ACAS.
Activity is also underway to organise a National Demonstration(s) as soon as practically possible.
Yours sincerely
Dave Ward
Deputy General Secretary (P)
