Re: Managers union now involved, it gets better!!
I'm a manager within Royal Mail and have been since 1986.
That doesn't mean I don't have the utmost respect for my boys at whatever office I've been a DOM previously - and that respect has always been mutual. I don't (and never have) bullied, harassed or patronised my lads nor asked them to do anything that I wasn't prepared to do myself. I have helped not only with work related problems but took time to assist with personal problems as well. I've gained respect and it's been earnt.
I also don't cross picket lines.......... purely upon principle.
I also don't like receiving intimidating communications telling me it's mandatory to cover operational work.
I also don't like people at the top, that basically don't know what the postal service means to it's customers or employees, getting fat cat wages when the rest of us don't get a pay rise and see our pension fund drained due to p*ss poor government investment.
Finally, I don't like being automatically branded as one of 'they are all the same' by some OPG's on forums that are ignorant enough to believe ALL managers fall within the aforementioned categories.
Not all managers are CMA/Unite Members but many of us that are sympathise with your dispute. We are not all the enemy - please treat each individual manager upon his/her merits - in the same way that some of us treat you.

I'm afraid you're one of the few and that's why we are not exactly singing managers praises on here.
You might not like this intimidating email/letter but try having an intimidating superior of yours with the power to sack you or make your life a misery shouting in your face or telling you you are useless and to get a different job. Try having that regularly mate. I can see your point but you come on here after geting what ONE intimidating letter. We live with it EVERY DAY.
And you're also moaning about no pay rise and a poor pension. Jesus I can hardly believe this. How much are you on pa including bonuses? Are you on a pay-scale? What will your actual pension be?
I'm sure you do find you are treated fairly by 'your lads' because we've nothing to gain by treating you like scum. Managers on the other hand have performance bonuses. WE ARE NOT YOUR FECKIN LADS. ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
AND WE ARE NOT OPG'S WERE FECKIN PEOPLE

Re: Managers union now involved, it gets better!!
There are a few managers like yourself, but not many , it is the newer managers that are a problem the ones that have been with RM for less than 10 years, they tend to have no backbone. If senior management implements a new plan and it is not working the line managers tend to go along with the plan even when they know it is one big hell of a mess. The mananagers that have been with RM for over 10 tend to tell the senior managers where to go with the incoherent plans.Manager 1 wrote:I'm a manager within Royal Mail and have been since 1986.

OPGPAT:
Just to put you right on something. My lads CONSIDER THEMSELVES my lads because we:
Drink together
Go horse racing together
Play football together
Watch football together
And
Get the job done together
This may be completely alien to you but we actually get on socially (as well as in work) and back each other all the way down the line. So the fact when I walk in first thing in the morning I greet them with 'morning lads' to be greeted in return by 'morning guv/geeza/mate' is wrong in your view? I'd love you to work at my place for a day to see the real world in some places. Don't think for one minute I see the firm through rose coloured specs and think all offices run like this because I know they don't. However, I can assure you that SOME DO!
I'm always willing to argue the toss on their behalf if I feel it's what's needed. I never have been a lap dog to senior management and I never will be - I'm an ex CWU Rep (81-86).
You clearly have a problem - evident by your personal comments about my pay. With all due respect, what has my pay got to do with you? The salary I get is agreed between Royal Mail and the CMA and I have little (make that NO) input into it. As for my bonus, as a DOM I know for a fact that what I received last year was LESS than my postmen got from their monthly bonus.....and bloody good luck to them because they deserve it! Don't believe some of the propaganda you may have read about our bonus - it didn't hold true for everyone! That said, it was my choice to move from an OPG the same way I would assume nothing has stopped you from doing so? Moreover, the point I made about US not getting a pay rise and now a two bob pension to look forward to referred to US as in managers AND Postmen!
Just so you know, I've also assisted 4 postmen over the past 5 years fulfil their ambitions to become line managers. What would you prefer? Managers that have worked on the floor as postmen and know the firm..........or direct graduate entrants? Or maybe you work in Utopia and think things could just manage themselves by default?
Regarding your personal treatment. If you are seriously saying that you have a confrontational manager that undermines you and demonstrates threatening behaviour, then don't hesitate to enter a Bullying & Harassment case. I assume (hope) if this has happened you have witnesses? Royal Mail Employees, no make that anyone in society in general, does not have to tolerate bullying in any way, shape or form (and before you go all anti-manager on me saying any investigsting manager has a biased view, let me assure you that I handled a B&H case two months ago and upheld 8 of the 11 grievances raised by the postman against another manager).
Finally, I've got to say this OPGPAT - love the fact that you say you are NOT OPG's but you are people..........and have subsequently given yourself the name OPG Pat!
Just a slight contradiction?

You sound like a decent manager ( not many about though), will you put your name forward as an investigation manager for investigating bullying and harassment claims because we need more neutral managers like youself who seems to support their staff. This is the first time in decades that I have heard a manager being positive, keep up the good work and don't make senior management grind you down.Manager 1 wrote:OPGPAT:

Manager 1 thankyou for your comments, keep it up.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Manager 1 - thanks for the honesty is refreshing as is every post by every manager, postie and customer who debates from a basis of conviction, knowledge of the issues and honesty. Okay there are some out there who won't listen but I will be watching their posts.
Lads
(sorry opgat couldn't resist) if we shoot down posters just because they are managers, aren't we doing the exact thing we accuse others of, bullying. If we have a poster who has a different viewpoint then you then argue your case forcefully but politely, and please don't dismiss a position or post just because of the source.
Manager 1 is an Ex-Postie, and ex Rep and a current Manager who does not cross picket lines, I think his insight could be of use to this forum, and I hope he continues to post, even if on occasion I may disagree with him at least it will be done with mutual respect.

I don't think I would like working at your office Manager1
Nobody has asked you to.
I don't socialise with colleagues or managers
Your choice - and long may you have that choice.
there is a distinct difference between work and play
My outlook is to treat people as people whether they are in a blue shirt or civvies at the Weekend. I treat human beings as human beings irrespective of the time, day, month. etc. In my view, to wear two hats is unacceptable and two faced.
no one is any doubt where they stand with me
I'm sure they aren't !
all are treated the same
Agree 100%.........what makes you think I don't treat everyone the same?
there is something faintly patronising in the way you say "my lads"
I'm sure that if anyone felt 'patronised' they would have let me know by now. We work in a very rough inner city area and I have some larger than life characters that are more than capable of expressing their opinion.
are there no ladies or is yours one of those 5 frame wonder offices.
No I don't have any postwomen; the one woman I had working with me is now a work area manager at the Mail Centre after I gave her every assistance to develop her skills (and particularly her confidence) before getting her placed onto the LAYGO course to become a line manager.

True Blue Terrier,
Thanks for your comments.
Suffice to say that I have to keep my personal details private; due to any repercussions I may experience due to making my views available on a public forum. I really don't know what is (or isn't) contravened as I (in the same way other employees have) signed the Official Secrets Act. Suffice to say I would not state anything that knowingly put Royal Mail or our people in jeopardy.
Rest assured, everything I type is truthful and reflect my views. It's refreshing to have an outlet to get some issues off my chest; issues that I readily admit are not the viewpoint of some managerial colleagues!
If I can give any advice to anyone, at any time, then I'd be only too pleased to help. I know that the vast majority of us just want to do a decent days work and to provide our punters with the service that they rightfully expect and deserve.
Sincere best wishes to everyone on this board irrespective of whether they agree with my views, management style, etc. or not.
