I've an answer to the Royal Mail crisis: sack Adam Crozier.

The Post Office boss isn't worth the £18,200 of a postie, let alone the £3m lotto-size win he picked up recently.

Gordon Brown has his critics but not even David Cameron would argue Crozier's worth 15 Prime Ministers.

Before the chief executive's minions moan, I know your boss collected "only" £1.3m in the 12 months to April. But he isn't worth six-and-a-half PMs, let alone the earnings of 71 men and women who do the real work for below the average national wage.

Crozier's bought the sharp suits and learned slick patter as a marketing man selling Pedigree Petfoods before moving on to Saatchi and Saatchi and then the FA.

But being on the brink of a national walkout tells me he's clueless as the head of a publicly-owned corporation in a political crisis. Playing the ruthless anti-union boss by threatening to employ 30,000 strike-breakers lurches back to a Thatcherite 1980s many of us hoped was history.

And the Government's failure to get to grips earlier with what would be a catastrophic dispute is another example of Labour's drift.

Peter Mandelson sounds suspiciously as if he's sulking after the posties' union scuppered his privatisation plot. To be "beyond anger" is to continue a hammy act that brought the house down at the Labour conference but is ham-fisted when the stakes are so high.

Rather than pose as a Maggie Mandy, he should be on the phone to Crozier instructing his million-pound employee to get this settled.

The Communication Workers Union is no saint but it's insulting to claim it resists change when 40,000 jobs have vanished in a couple of years. And let's never forget this supposedly knackered business made a £321m profit.

I wonder if Brown, Mandelson and the rest of the Cabinet appreciate the terrible damage to Labour should the strikes go ahead. The banksters brought this Government to its knees and it would be a tragedy if we heard a faint echo of the socalled Winter of Discontent that did for Callaghan 30 years ago.

Brown hopes to announce the official end of the recession on Friday, a golden opportunity for Labour to take credit and machine-gun Cameron's Cut-servatives.

The PM can kiss goodbye to favourable headlines if picketing posties are warming their hands at burning braziers.

Loudmouth Labour MP Barry Sheerman made a fool of himself to earn right-wing plaudits for a self-serving "bit of a bully" attack on Children's Secretary Ed Balls.

The embittered Huddersfield MP, overlooked for ministerial office by Tony Blair and Brown, is a symptom of Labour's loss of discipline.

Royal Mail strikes would be a sign of a more serious problem: a lack of political and industrial direction.
