Royal Mail is recruiting to help with the distribution of post in the run up to Christmas

Some have criminal convictions, but references are not being checked before they start work.

Applicants are simply asked to provide a passport and a utility bill.

One man revealed he was phoned just 15 minutes after he emailed his CV to a recruitment agency - and asked when he could start.

The temps are asked to fill in a police security check form, stating they have no criminal record.

But according to one witness, at least one man was hired - and given a security badge to enter sorting offices packed with valuable mail - despite admitting he had spent time in prison.

No way is it acceptable to the public for temporary workers to be working before they have been properly vetted. I would prefer my mail late rather than nicked!

You'd have thought RM would have learnt it's lesson after being shafted by Channel 4's " Dispatches " in the past . However you have to use the same " suspension of reality " that you use with daft Hollywood Formula Films .

It's the sort of organization that would make cardboard submarines . What people forget is these depots and offices are institutions ( some managers and staff should never be let out of one without supervision ) , bit like a Prison . Somebody commenting on Jeffrey Archer's imprisonment said " unless you've been to a Public School or in the services , you might as well be on another planet " .

There's the " Prison - The World that makes sense " line in " The Shawbank Redemption " film .

RM do not solve problems they just make them worse , a storm in a teacup is usually turned into a disaster . They simply don't do common sense , perspective and proportion - that's Phase 5 and RM will probably once again blame the Union again for all their ills . They've operated in a permanent panic / crisis mode for some time , they also use siege mentality management - hence the poor IR & morale .

RM has the same problems as most organizations - only taken to literal ( which is a very limited way of thinking ) extremes and handled very badly .

yep. cant believe RM havent learned from the previous fine. I suppose any future fine for workers who have not been properly vetted (last one was reduced on appeal I believe) is likely to be smaller than the potential level of lost business in a strike?

This fight is becoming more and clearer to me the longer it goes on....this isn’t about post and customers now. It’s about morality, right and wrong and standing up for our rights. We have seen how this country is run. By greedy individuals who don’t give a damn about the people they are supposed to look after. It’s all about lining their pockets at any cost. Look at the banks, look at the MP expenses scandal, look at how much Adam Crozier and his kind are paid, look at our laws and how murderers, rapists, muggers ,embezzlers, drunk drivers,peadophiles, benefit cheats all get off with pathetic punishment for their crimes. If you try to defend yourself or others you are the one in the dock!! We need to stand up to this and fight it all the way.

We bang on about how great our democratic society is...pah. Was the man in charge of it all voted in by you or me? NO! he wasn’t, nor was Peter Mandleson (who was sacked twice before) or any of the other people left to bring this country to its knees. So this fight we all now face isn’t about letters or packets or unrealistic budgets and so on. It’s about the average hardworking honest, reliable, trustworthy man or woman taking a stand about everything that is wrong about this country. These unelected people who have turned this country into a state where unemployed people are better off on the dole and where greed, lies, cheats, dishonesty, bullies and users are all rewarded and the real fabric of society who keep this country going are slapped down at any attempt to question the people who are "supposed" to represent us and our best interests and concerns.

This fight cannot and will not be lost. This is our chance to show what the working man/woman in this country feels about all the things we suffer on a daily basis in work and infact out of it. Our very constitution depends on it.

RM are only being more " conciliatory " as they've taken a pasting in the papers for being underhand & shifty .
