Thank you for your continuing support of our operations.

I am impressed by the dedication and commitment you have shown in keeping the mail moving in these difficult times. It is because of you that we have been able to maintain a service to our customers.

As you are aware, the CWU has announced a rolling strike this week on Thursday and Friday which will give us our biggest challenge so far.

This week we will need to cover a nationwide strike while clearing the backlog that remains in London. It means I must ask everyone to support the operation for two days this week.

You will recall, I wrote to you back in September, explaining that two days' support per week would be the minimum expected level. The need to provide a service for customers relying on us means this can no longer be optional .

Providing critical support has a priority over all other work in the business!

The future of Royal Mail is threatened and we cannot continue with our 'business as usual' work at the expense of our customers and the operation.

When you are contacted by the Critical Support team shortly, please be flexible and help them as much as you can. If you can support the operation for more than two days - so much the better. At this stage it is only mandatory to do two days, however this may need to increase if the dispute continues.

Dear Mr Higson

Instruction to Managers

I have been advised that you have to-day issued an instruction to managers to attend the operation for a minimum of 2 days per week during the official industrial action undertaken by the Communication Workers Union.

Unite deplores this action and is not currently in dispute with Royal Mail. It is inappropriate for our members' to be instructed to undertake work that is not proper to their grade and for which they are not contracted.

Accordingly, Unite must insist that this unreasonable instruction be withdrawn with immediate effect. Our members are of course obliged to work normally, which is in line with the advice we have given to members thus far.

To force our members into such an invidious position would be inappropriate and potentially dangerous. Royal Mail has a duty of care of its employees, now and in the future, and this unilateral action by Royal Mail undermines its responsibilities.

I am prepared to meet with you as a matter of urgency to discuss this but this instruction will have to be withdrawn before any meaningful dialogue can take place.

that UNITE officer , Paul Reuter has been scathingly critical of RM's Senior Management's attitude and manner in the past .

There's been a few missives from RM's " Kremlin " that have been very intimidating in tone , one very off - hand recently leaked one sounded if it was written by " Joe Maplin " from " Hi - di - Hi "

I think this all hints at the cause of the current IR problem , Senior Managers twisting matters to suit their bloody minded , belligerent , bombastic and bullying agenda - not a very good example to set for a organization with a supposed zero tolerance policy on bullying .

This just shows how much man management experience Higson has, and how little he knows about human relations. Keep it up Mark, we will soon have the managers out with us as well. This company will survive because it has a dedicated workforce and the competition are still nowhere. They are already bleating about being overstretched and cutting off their computer sales programmes for fear of damaging relationships with existing customers. We need to keep the pressure on and eventually the stakeholder will turn in on these make a fast buck parasites, and then hopefully we can look forward to a new beginning with meaningful modernisation where a fresh management team can work alongside us dedicated people and provide a company that is fit for the future, which benefits all of us and not a few people who believe that modernisation is decimation of the workforce, twist the arm of the few who are silly enough to have their arms twisted to work like lemmins, to create a false profit that has no chance of being maintained. These people do not have the skills of true entrepreneurs, to get out in the marketplace and win new and profitable business. They expect it to fall into their laps. Instead of paying huge bonuses to these executive managers, who haven,t even the skills to make themselves look bright on t/v interviews, we should be bringing in top notch sales people, so that when we do get properly tooled up, the business has forward thinking individuals to create the wealth that will make this company successful again, and make the rewards for hard work favourable for everyone and provide a proper retirement for the many years of foot slogging a postie has to do throughout his or her working life.

ITN news just reported that now the managers and their union are "up in arms" re Royal Mail forcing them to cover postal grade duties during dispute. Employment lawyer stated that RM are acting improperly. :mfo
