That this House welcomes the proposals put forward by the Communication Workers Union seeking to find a resolution to the current postal dispute, in particular their offer to explore the possibility of third party mediation; and calls on the Government to do all in its power to ensure that Royal Mail responds positively to the union's proposal.

full article , well done Geraldine Smith :Applause :Applause :Applause London Post Strike As MPs Back Peace Move
12:27pm UK, Wednesday October 14, 2009

Dozens of MPs have backed a peace deal aimed at halting a wave of postal strikes.

Postal services set to be disrupted up and down the country

An early day motion (EDM) tabled in the Commons supporting a peace offer put forward by the Communication Workers Union has been signed by more than 60 MPs.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) will announce tomorrow a series of strike dates that are likely to cripple the postal service in the run-up to Christmas.

The earliest they could walk out would be next Thursday.

A 24-hour strike by postal staff is taking place in London today.

The EDM, tabled by Morecambe and Lunesdale MP Geraldine Smith, reads: "This House welcomes the proposals put forward by the Communication Workers Union seeking to find a resolution to the current postal dispute, in particular their offer to explore the possibility of third party mediation, and calls on the Government to do all in its power to ensure that Royal Mail responds positively to the union's proposal."

Business secretary Lord Mandelson warned that a national postal strike would be a "suicidal act".

Postal workers have voted by three to one in favour of industrial action.

Dave Ward, the union's deputy general secretary, said: "Postal workers do not want to take strike action.

"But neither are they prepared to put up with continuing attacks from a management which is failing.

"We have offered what we believe is a genuine alternative to reach a lasting agreement."

Royal Mail managing director Mark Higson said: "If the union are serious about resolving this dispute they should immediately lift the threat of strike action."
"why should it just be the bankers, politicians and the idle rich who get all the best things ? we demand a standard of living for our members that enables them to share in the fine wines and times that the likes of Cameron and his Eton buddies take for granted " - the late great Bob Crow RIP.

I'll email my MP and ask her if she will support the EDM, but I don't expect a positive reply as she is a Lib Dem.

I'll will never vote Nu Liebour again........... But if my MP changes his stance?

How ever can any labour MP tell his electorate that he is behind smashing the right of any worker to withdraw their labour against the european workers right conventions is beyond anyones comprehension!

Mandelson stated earlier that he wasn't going to side with anyone in the postal dispute thou when questioned about the leaked document, it was clear that they were all for taking the management & RM boards side to defeat the union to open the way for a sale of the business to his free loading/ well paid pals. (He knew the presentation chapter and verse)

Hmm.. let's think, ahhh yes..... he goes on holiday( free) with the guys who own the music rights and comes back with this new piracy law :hmmmm

He's been sacked as a mp a couple of times for whatever :hmmmm :no no
Then new Liebour appear and he's the answer to all Gordons ( Oops Tony's ) Problems!!!!!

For Feck's sake Mr Brown....... Grow a pair and If you're going to go down.... do it on your own beliefs .....

{Stepping off the soap box now...... but just remember, most folk remember the 70's and the s**t that happened then and how long it took Labour to recover }

I'll sign off now with a lump in my throat ............. but just remember, 40% or more didn't vote in the last election, but I can assure you that all ther postmen/women and their families will vote...... against the way that New Liebour has tried to bring the working man to his Knees.

How can we as a nation spend Billions bailing out the banks?
How can we as a nation spend Millions helping out any car plant to save a couple of hundred jobs?
(Yet allow Thousands of postal workers go to the dole!)
How can we as a nation spend Millions to try and stave off unemployment but in the last year force 60,000
( Yes 60 Thousand) Postal jobs to go so far.... 40, 000 from January onwards!
this is obviously the thin edge of the wedge regarding the Public Sector and isn't just the postal workers eh........

Thanks for the time to speak RMchat. No one else gives a s**t to what's happening. :cuppa
I know you think you know what you think I meant!
But do you really know?

I see Barbara Follett our Mp isn't on it, she was going to visit the sorting office but bottled out when all the expenses row blew up. She was also going to look around the office last xmas too (as they do every year) but didn't come to that also.
