Drivers List /Make it Work for You!

Post by bristolchris »

Had a dispute with a line manager the other day. (why is it only me) Wanted to know why I had brought some pkt`s back. On previous occasions I have just asked him if he wished to "come out next day to see what I do when out on delivery" - pkt duty, this offer was always declined, wonder why?) Had a word with Area Rep because I was getting P***** o** with this! Any way, A/R sends me out the list below (he`s a good chap really) Now my fellow `packeteers` and I work to this list. Result job less stressful, average number of pkts delivered gone down (all to the book) when we get into Autumn pressure I think we are going to need another body. Another example of doing `it all to the book` their rules!

ADVICE FOR MEMBERS UNDERTAKING TESTS TO DRIVING DUTIES.

• All legal driving regulations must be upheld, these are as follows;

Speed limits must not be broken.

Seat belts must be worn at all times whilst the vehicle is being driven. This means seat belts must be in place prior to the engine being started and not released until the engine is switched off. Passengers (must be authorised by DOM) should also meet these requirements.

NO double parking (vehicles side by side) or parking on double yellow lines, even if only for a short while. Vehicles MUST be parked safely and legally.

The hand brake must be applied at all times whilst the vehicle is parked.

• All Royal Mail driving requirements must be upheld, these are as follows;

Vehicle safety checks must be undertaken as directed.

The safety of the mail is of paramount importance therefore the following security principles must be adhered to at all times.

There MUST NOT be any items of mail in the front part of the vehicle. All mail must be delivered from the rear of the vehicle. This also includes mail that requires a signature of receipt.

Perstop trays or other containers MUST NOT be used to store mail in the vehicle. Mail should be placed in the rear of the vehicle in the order that it should be delivered.

All doors must be locked whilst attempting delivery of mails. Even for a short time span.

All windows must be shut whilst the vehicle is vacated. Even for a short time span.

I did most of that today (except the seatbelts which I'll do from now on) and it added about 1 1/2 hours to the duty over what I would normally do, tomorrow I'll go the whole nine yards and I'll really be in the bad books. :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana :nana

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Rocky Hi, before going by these "new rules", between ourself`s over a couple of days, and each working independently we had worked it out at about 15/19 pkts per hour. Two of our team had worked for parcel force, and said this was the norm. Now I quote "above list" and say its not about ave`s but doing the job by this list ie by the "rules". I reckon this has brought the figure down to about 10/12?. For the last few weeks we have been told to count the number of total pkts we load per day, ( they are getting P****y) . Would be interested to hear what others find?

POSTMAN Hi, YOU ARE RIGHT ITS IMPOSSIBLE,you can get some sort of "figure " but the big problem is its a "state of mind". You look in the back of the van as the time goes on and think "bloody hell this lot is not going down" Then you start to speed(break the Law, etc) . With this `list` as a check its a question of NOT ANYMORE. |

Drivers List

Post by jonnyjava »

They make all drivers in our office sign to agree with all the rules on the list every 6 months. Does this happen at all offices? If we stick to them then the job can't get done. They know this and rely on us breaking them. They're just covering their backs so if anything goes wrong the book stops at you. Learnt this the hard way a couple of months ago rushing round on packets. Flashed by a speed camera doing 36 in a 30mph zone in my van. 3 points and a £60 fine. Followed the rules ever since and cut off every day.
Stick to the rules lads. They don't like it but can't touch you for it.

Packet Delivery

Post by overworked »

When delivering packets I have always worked at 12 per hour, or one every five minutes. This includes getting from one drop to the next, waiting for a reply and writing out a 739. Obviously the job can be done faster than this on a good day. Here in Cambridge the traffic is a nightmare most of the time, so it is difficult to work any quicker than this.

We were told the figure is 20 per hour. Don't know where they get the figures from? Does anybody know?

It was too light today to really make a difference but it still took approx. 30% more time than it would normally so I'll see tomorrow.

Remember drivers:
Always wear your seatbelts (even when moving the van a few metres)
Always keep all your mail in the back of the van
Always turn off your engine
Always wind up all windows
Always lock your van whenever you go to deliver no matter how short the distance

This way we won't end up on the conduct code for any security issues.
