Are these casuals going to deliver the mail or work in the MC? We only had 2 casuals in deliveries last xmas. If they are going to help deliver how are they going to get to delivery point, virtually all the convey vans have gone and replaced with small vans, I doubt there will be many hire vans this year, no room for them in the yard. are the casuals going to being driving, aswell as do packets for an area they don't know? If they go out on delivery I can guarantee most of them won't last the week.

Just heard on the radio Mandelson saying next week R/M are to employee 30,000 casual staff to be strike breakers.

In our office we have had casual staff and the agency that employees them have been charging R/M £13.50 hr for each individual. The casuals get paid £5.80 hr by the agency but the cost to R/M to employee this amount of casual staff comes to £405,000 and they have the gaul to keep saying we must save money here here and here year in year out with there office savings this makes great business sense doesnt it.

Its great to hear that this labour goverment is trying its upmost to help resolve this dispute ( NOT ) .They are in co-hoots with R/M once and for all the destroy the CWU just like the tories did back in the days of the miners dispute. This is going to be one drawn out dispute i have no doubt about that now and i just hope the union stays strong.
I for one on returning to work tomorrow will be requesting to my DIM that he informs our local labour party MP that they stay away from our office on there annual xmas visit to save causing unrest in our office. Never again will i vote labour have they forgotten what the labour party once stood for (the working class).

RM ususally employ 15,000 staff at christmas so in reality they are only employing 15,000 extra staff. Nowhere near enough.

How many of these will quit after a few days? Loads.

How many will be sacked for thieving and being useless. Loads.

Will these people be subject to the minimum sorting standards? I doubt it.

My office has just held interviews for christmas casuals and NONE have been vetted. I know this cause some of my customers hae applied. All they were asked was if they'd had any operations in their life. No CRB checks have been done. This would cost RM miliions.

Its management plans in my office to get people to come in at 430 over christmas to do extra sorting and take out only half of their round. A casual will then do the other half. What crap. I couldnt see an untrained casual doing my round. They wouldnt find half the addresses.

Dont worry guys. This announcement is designed only to provoke us.

This is a serious scabbing attempt, and rather than mess about our union leaders had better mount a massive legal challenge and demand labour forces RM to back down if not prepare to mobilise the labour movement behind us to do it ourselves.

Lets be careful not to be too complacent, sure they will be s**t to start with but they will soon be up to speed, and unless we go all-out they will allow RM to sort the backlog enough to squeeze through with full government support. We should insist on a massive campaign throughout the trade unions including the TUC to challenge this and force labour to back down. Without the money of unite, unison, gmb etc they would be sunk in the next election. If hayes ward and the rest wont push on this out of fear of damaging labour then we need new leaders.

I forsee this being a long, drawn out dispute with many twists and turns. Letting RM believe we wont be out after Christmas is damaging.

We must be ready to escalate the dispute once Christmas is out of the way, if an agreement on our terms is not reached. RM cannot employ casual staff with good reason or with profit then.
