National Postal Strike Dates Announced
Postal workers are to stage two nationwide strikes next week in a bitter row over pay, jobs and working conditions.
National postal strike dates have been announced
About 42,000 mail centre staff and drivers will walk out on Thursday, October 22 for 24 hours,.
And on Friday, October 23, 78,000 delivery and collection staff will walk out for 24 hours.
The Communication Workers Union said it had made a "genuine offer" to avert a national strike and accused the Royal Mail of rejecting it without proper consideration.
More than 60 Labour MPs have publicly backed the union's offer.
One attacked Business Secretary Lord Mandelson and Postal Affairs minister Lord Young over their opposition to the CWU.
The CWU's so-called peace offer is a list of threats and demands against Royal Mail, including a demand for more money and an absolute veto over any future change and modernisation, which no company would give.
Royal Mail spokesman
The Prime Minister said the Royal Mail could lose major contracts if the "unnecessary" walk-out was not prevented.
"We want to see a settlement of this dispute. But we want to say that this dispute is not in the interests of anybody.
"If Royal Mail start to lose major contracts, like those of some of the major firms in this country, it will be difficult for them to regain these contracts over a short period of time."
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "The CWU's so-called peace offer is a list of threats and demands against Royal Mail, including a demand for more money and an absolute veto over any future change and modernisation, which no company would give."
Billy Hayes, CWU general secretary, said: "Our offer included a three-year proposal to secure stability for the Royal Mail."

Delivery offices in mail centres will go out with the mail centre except where its been requested differently.

What about 'distribution Centres'. Do we treat them as Mail Centre, which means they'd be out on strike on Thursday? I so wanted a long weekend!

Its great that we are finally going out but why oh why do the press keep harping on about pay, don't know about the rest of you but pay is at the bottom of my list of problems with RM.

If MC are out Thursday from 04.00 Will their not be almost the same amount for us to deliver on Thursday ,in 2007 when mail center went out it seemed to make no difference
to deliveries in my area.
