People will always use their car as long as (a) it makes their own lives easier and (b) they're allowed to.

End of thread. :wave

royal mail have no need to buy any new vans, bikes or employ anyone for driving duties etc. why should they with free vehicles, tax, mot, insurance, petrol and wear and tear. lovely

What's the real reason for die hards hating car users? I don't get it.

I don't drive yet ( which is vaguely pathetic seen as im 22 ) but i would imagine given some duties i'd employ the "if i could i would " scenario.

Don't get me wrong there are people who use cars who are clearly being a bit stupid because a bike would make life easier, but i can easily think of duties where a car makes sense. Out of the way start points, new housing estates that have no real places to stand a bike ( fences etc ), inconvenient pouch box locations, easy replenishing, no need to carry a whole pouch box worth.

Seems unlikely they'll give vans to non CDV duties. Looking at the garbage bikes and late bag drops lately, i have to admit i envy car users.

In a way you have answered your own question. Management won't change "inconvenient" pouch box locations, or even ask for planning permission to site new ones for new builds etc, so when a non car user covers the duty he suffers through no fault of their own. He will not be able to communicate, and his standards and commitment to RM will be questioned if he cuts off or claims overtime.

Per Se I have nothing against car use, unless it has a direct consequence on others and in the above scenario its does. What is acceptable to me is for 1 person to use his car to get out to his duty, and carry 1 bag - nothing else. This is convenient for them as it allows a quick trip home instead of relying on public transport. Taking extra bags out reduces the time on the drivers duty initially, however, as we all know give RM an inch and they'll take a mile and as happened in my DO they added on to the drivers duty as new businesses started and now he does not have enough time to drop all the bags and the manager has to reply on car users to take them out. If and when car use is banned there will be utter chaos.

look they want you to work to your time. so why would you use your car. just work to your time and what ever you haven't delivered pouch off and go home. sooner we all get it into our head's that we're working to time the better.

When I started at RM nearly twenty years ago every union meeting the branch secretary talked of not using cars on delivery and talked and talked and talked. Nothing changed. Last year as part of the Pegasus cock-up we voted not to use cars on delivery. So far it has held with bags being dropped of by still employed drivers. What I cannot understand is why a national union in a national company has not got a national policy on what seems a quite simple issue. No private cars on deliveries.

up till now the carrot has been job and finish so we've used car's. but now they're giving us more and more work and cutting full time job's. we all have to accept that we're going to have to work to our time. that's fine with us but it mean's we do the job properly and work safely. no over weight bag's proper break's no car's. the only reason really for using your own car is if you have job and finish but they want that to end so the car's must end as well.

Forget agreements forget this forget that, you have to be conveyed back to the office if you leave your car there in duty time end off!
RM even said it in a news article put up by Daz,but it's offline now the link.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Agree , if you're not job and finish then why bother using cars , seems a bit pointless.
If you use your car you should know the risks and most do.
I am prepared to use my car and know the risks.
The car thing has been blown out of all proportion and if the Union and Royal mail get together and can sort out a good deal (I'm talking about insurance issues etc. ) that would help us (for those that are prepared to use their own private vehicles) and the industry big time .
When you sum it all up it is a way to go forward for the industry , the customers, US , but like I said, a proper deal needs to be drawn up.

what would happen for arguments sake if you accidently leave mail in your car be it one packet or a mail sort letter.. and you get pulled over on a sunday night by the police and they find mail in your car.. It then gets reported to your office, what would managment do? i have a good idea... I would always go back to the office check your bags are clear or your van then there is no problem.. But rushing around in your car to get home, its just a matter of time
