Lets get this straight everyone, the union has not announced any strike dates or what format they will take yet.

They have sent a letter to royal mail today, with a 'last chance' offer attatched.

If they do not get the response they desire, strike dates will be announced this thursday, because of the seven days notice required this means any action cannont START until thursday the 22nd.

So i'm assuming this does not mean it is only a one dayer, but simply that the 22nd has to be the first day of action.

Who actually buys the new Windows programs I personally am still using XP MCE on a couple of computers (and even Windows ME on one ) so I certainly know that it'll be at least a couple of years before I even look to buy a new computer which by then should have the new OS on it.

Me! I buy the new OSs! And it isn't cheap - we have 9 computers at the moment, 4 laptops and 5 desktops, some purchased, some I built and I don't buy the new OS for them all - we've bought 4 at the moment and I have the OS trialling on one of the laptops - it seems OK but it doesn't seem too different to Vista.

Dgp get your hand in your pocket and buy a new one - they're so cheap, even cheaper if you build your own AND you can put what you like in them - one of our m/bs went down last week and it cost just £40 for a new one, an hours work, out with the old and in with the new.

I've stripped down and rebuilt many computers but the most fun I have is upgrading them but even though I'm using Vista at the moment (on this laptop) I actually prefer XP because it's more stable (now that all the problems have been fixed ).

PS. I'd prefer to use Linux but at the moment everything seems to be loaded toward Windows.

Nice one! I have been interested in computers since my son was at school and we couldn't afford to keep upgrading - it was very expensive then. He progressed through school, college and then Uni and we still share the passion for computers - though he can write programmes and bugger about with software I was always the practical one and left the nitty gritty to him even as a teenager.

I have read a good deal about Linux but never really got into it since the early days when it was difficult to get drivers for scanners and printers etc and of course Windows was an easy option.

Our first computer had windows 3.1, with a 14.4k modem, we had AOL - no sound, no CD ROM, just a floppy (and no snide remarks please), the internet loaded line by line on a 12 inch monitor and took forever, the cost for AOL was £32 per month with 1p a minute surcharge and of course the phone bill - so the photo is not far off the mark - I've certainly got more grey hair. I think it was 4k memory and 40mb HDD - everything more or less ran from the floppy, we printed on a dot matrix printer....................

Now look at today - all the flash drives have more memory than that PC - I did sell it though and bought a new one.
