Billy Hayes: Post union boss under pressure to deliver

I wouldn't worry too much about it - they say there is no such thing as bad publicity and anything that keeps the debate going is a good thing. The members disenchantment with the leadership is nothing new, there have been many posts since 2007 that have been critical of all the leaders and the role that Labour have played in this and the previous dispute and not least of all the pension. It cannot have been missed that the majority of the CWU membership feel aggrieved that there seems to be a determination by the leadership to continue to support Labour despite the reluctance to become involved in what is a publicly owned company.

What these journalists shouldn't forget is that there may be "family" differences of opinion but at the end of the day it is solidarity that counts. The old adage still applies that "sticks and stones may break my bones but calling never hurt me" and I am sure that Billy is a big enough man to take the criticisms aimed at him.

Billy Hayes, General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union, is facing a growing rebellion from within his own ranks over the strike that will cause misery in the run-up to Christmas.

Royal Mail workers used an internet forum to launch a series of scathing attacks on a leader some suggest is failing to get their message across.

"He is a 24-carat ----. Get him out now," wrote one postman, a union rep in southwest London. Another, who uses the sign-on 'Sticks', described Mr Hayes, who is 56, as "a useless bumbling dithering old idiot" adding for good measure: "We need rid of him as soon as!"

The protests didn't end there. He is called variously 'uninspiring', a 'stumbling oaf', or else a 'muppet'.

A postal worker, who calls himself "Axeman", wrote: "Fat Billy needs to be sidelined as soon as possible. Can he go sick?"
To his detractors, however, he is less than endearingly known as 'Fat Billy', the firebrand union boss who is leading his members into a national strike that risks destroying the very postal service he says he is trying to protect. It is not clear if the use of the word 'fat' refers to his bulk or else the size of his salary which weighs in at a hefty £97,000 a year. A postman's pay starts at £16,26
Hayes is certainly aware of the pressure he is under and has so far kept the smile on his face. But whether this is a postman who can actually deliver, only the next few weeks will tell. It's a high risk strategy – that like Arthur Scargill's before it – may be doomed to failure.

Presented as a nice cuddly plea for understanding and sympathy it oozes spin and drips pure poison with almost every paragraph.
Funny how this crafty hack manages to make it read like Axeman and Sticks think our "firebrand"( )GS is dragging them kicking and screaming into a dispute that they will never forgive him for starting.I'd say that was willful misrepresentation.
Slip in the bit about his salary "hefty" still probably less than your dentist earns(funny no mention of senior management pay or the 100% bonuses made by some under investigation on suspicion of tampering with mail and rigging the quality figures)Surely not the old divide and rule gambit?

Anyone with common-sense will acknowledge that Dave Ward, as Deputy General Secretary (Postal), has shown, and will continue to show, the leadership required in the upcoming dispute, leaving Billy to focus ........ elsewhere.

The membership will decide the course of this dispute irrespective of whether it be a 'muppet' or a 'braveheart' that is their spokesperson.

Surely, any industry that focuses so much attention on 'Peter Andre and Katie Price' cannot expect to be taken seriously. The press cast the Hayes' and Crozier's of this world as like characters of some soap-drama where the story-line runs for a few days and then fizzles out or some dramatic accident occurs killing the aforementioned (sadly, for the postal industry, it is likely to be the former than the latter). Once there is not the slightest bit of juice left to be squeezed from their sweaty balls they will be dropped in favour of some other equally non-event piece of news.

in 2007 who could of known that royal mail were going to twist that agreement to the extent they did a liberal interpretation to say the least, rogered would be an apt word for it. we got stung from the top to the bottom [sales of savlon soared[ i think billy heyes knows what we want and will do his utmost to deliver

And who was to believe that after the union told us they would make sure that the agreement was water tight so RM couldn't drive a coach and horses through it , that RM would do just that.
