1st class Yorkies.

Post by NEWS »

POSTIES in the York area have one of the best records in the country for delivering mail on time, new figures showed today.

The Royal Mail's latest quality of service results showed in the York postcode, 95.3 per cent of first class letters were delivered the next working day.

That placed the code in joint 15th place in a nationwide league table, along with the Hull postcode.

Across northern England as a whole, Royal Mail achieved the minimum target of delivering 91.5 per cent of first class post the next day in all 30 of the region's postcodes.

The nation's best performing postcodes were Huddersfield and Kingston-Upon-Thames, in each of which 96 per cent of mail was delivered the following day.

But other areas, including Harrogate, did less well, but still met the minimum standard.
"Postwatch welcomes these results, and Royal Mail’s efforts to improve postal performance."
Judith Donovan

Postwatch, the watchdog for postal services, praised the latest figures, which it showed the company was on course to meet 11 of its 12 annual performance targets.

Judith Donovan, chairwoman of Postwatch Northern England, said: "Postwatch welcomes these results, and Royal Mail's efforts to improve postal performance.

"We hope this continues in the final quarter of this year, and that the quality of service in poorer performing areas, such as Blackburn and Harrogate, is able to catch up with other parts of the region."

York's good performance comes only weeks after a special surgery was held at the city's Central Library by Postwatch, at which members of the public were invited to notify it of their postal gripes.

It said it knew there had been some postal service problems in the York area recently, including lost mail and misdeliveries.

Among the grievances aired at the meeting were post arriving late or not at all, and the opening hours of Royal Mail's York sorting offices.

One man said he had a letter from Holland that took four-and-a-half weeks to arrive, had a birthday card from Suffolk which was not delivered, and had lost a cheque in the post, all within 12 months, and he claimed the service was worse than it used to be.

Another resident, who collected First Day Covers, said the quality of service he received had worsened since he moved to the area last year.
