Cost cutting means that parcels are not always delivered to your door

SIR – I work from home, but I still receive "Sorry, you were out" cards from my postman. One morning, I cornered him and politely asked why he never knocks to see if I am in. I discovered that not only does he not knock, but he doesn't have any of the parcels with him.

Apparently, if the delivery consists of more than three parcels per street or shift, Royal Mail has to send a van. To avoid this, when the postman picks up his batch of letters to deliver, he is also handed a collection of "Sorry, you were out" cards to post through our letter boxes.


Does Royal Mail deserve to survive
as a business? I think not.

SIR – Our postmen have been told by their managers to concentrate on delivering tracked items with a compensation deadline, such as Special Delivery.

Ordinary mail will be delivered only if the postman has time at the end of his working day, and no overtime will be paid. It seems that Royal Mail's policies are responsible for current delays.

Thats great, I regularly take out 30/40 packets/parcels per day so I can now just leave them and put in P739s (of course we don't have any at the minute so that wouldn't work either ).

Yeah, because that's exactly what happens - we walk into the office and pick up a nice ready sorted batch of letters to take out Who's gonna tell them about the 3-4 hours prep work?

As a walking postie-I can tell you in our office I regularly take out more packets that 3 per bag!
