How bad is this Job is compared to outside ?

Post by NWpostie »

I have heard a lot of lads and lasses moaning here about how crap the Job is and would run off if given the chance, now the real question is just how sh1t it it ?

The answer would be best given by somebody who has come in from outside RM and is in a position to compare.

I for one would be very interested.

belive me the posties are being screwed for sure you have only to talk to those in employment elsewhere the pension is a joke if you compare it to others in industry. A good neighbour of mine who's not a skilled person only the other day remarked that the pension was a joke compared to his and his salary is somewhat larger no he's not in management but it's near three times ours  .
Another guy i knew who drove tankers retired some years ago (5/8) and his lumpsum was well over £75 plus i guess a good weekly pension as well as he's always abroad in canada , usa

both of these are reasonable examples as they to are not as nt or his buddy would say apprentised or have any other quilifactions

It depends what you are comparing it with, I worked for myself for over 20 years and its better than that, as you forget about the job when you knock off, which you you never do when you are your own boss, but I look upon this job as semi retirement, crap pay,, crap hours but resonably secure, but now that I am mid 50's I am finding it bloody hard work, and if I cant get out at 60, then the the last 5 years are going to be one hell of a struggle, maybe lots of sick leave required.

The pay is okay for unskilled work, but the work is physically more demanding than many jobs.
lately work targets are much worse than anywhere i've worked before.

I spent 10 years in two other management roles in completely different business fields. I have been a postman (NOT MANAGER!!) with RM for 6 years now, and whilst the job is enjoyable, the senior management are making an easy job hard. PLUS I have NEVER seen people manage the way Royal Mail management operate. They seem to get off on bully boy tactics, and the management job only seems to be cut out for those who can nod and say 'yes, I'll do whatever you say, without the need to question if it's right or wrong'! It's as if their day is not complete without having an argument with you. Tossers! :evil/mad

In short the job is not bad but the management are making it that way.

Yeah, I agree. The only real problems you should face with this job are boredom and (depending on when and where you work) a lack of available overtime.

Hmm, funny that pension experts still reckon it's one of the best around (black hole aside) for benefits and pay-outs. Many outside pension plans have either shut or been watered down to the absolute minimum.

Pretty meaningless unless you say what his job is, but "not a skilled person" earning close on sixty grand and with a much better pension than RM's sounds like BS.

I have a couple of friends in management positions with other companies - they both earn around £25-£27k and work 50-55hr weeks, plus the odd weekend as well (salaried so no extra pay)

No way would I leave RM to do that, we do a basically unskilled job (though it's still too hard for a lot of people) for a decent wage.

If you think RM is crap try working in a shop, I worked for a mens clothes shop before I joined RM - I lasted 4 hours before walking out and never going back. Unbelievable boredom and wages significantly lower than a posties.

Working in retail and food service is a lot worse. With few hours and rotating shifts and lack of money.

Postman job is great but

you need your own walk as rotating walks doesn't help
balancing walks to make it better
cut out politics
cut down IPS sorting
need automation for sorting.
changing start time back to 5am will help.

There will always be better and worse jobs than postman.

Worked outside Royal Fail for forty years and was never treated like I am now. With royal mail you are treated like a numty unable to think for yourself, treated like a child, not trusted, management unable to man manage, only reason management get away with the useless way they run the company is because it is state owned any other business and they would be sacked.ROYAL MAIL MANAGEMENT FROM TOP :cfo TO BOTTOM ARE USELESS B@STARDS :left: :wave

I've recently been trying to think of another job in the UK thats as physically demanding and requires you to work outdoors in all weathers... the only thing I can think of would be working on a fishing trawler? Anyone come up with anything else?

Compared to some of my mates the job was easy but the pay wasn't good, over the years the only thing that made the job bearable was and still is the great people I have and am still working with,

I enjoy my job believe it or not and ive done some sh**e jobs in my time before i worked for R/M 14 yrs ago. The problem is the pay is crap ok better than most unskilled but would you class it as unskilled.

We are all a skilled workforce so what if you dont have to sit a course for 3-4 yrs to get a qualy out of it that doesnt stop it from being unskilled as its classed does it.

Take any joe off the street if its that unskilled and ask them to do what we do they wouldnt have clue would they be honest. Yes it would only take a week or so for them to get to grips with it all but im my eyes it still skilled.

Think about what we carry in our pouches for the pay we receive its crap and you all know it. All the sensestive documents ccs,b/day cards etc etc.

No i couldnt get the same pay or hours locally so in that aspect its well paid but not for what we do and carry.

Yes im glad i dont have to fork out for a uniform or have to wear my own clothes for work as in the past. Yes im glad i dont have to work in muck or dust anymore.

All in all its a good job but the way its been heading over the last couple of years has been a disgrace. Better pay F/T jobs better working conditons etc etc stay away from the propaganda and the jobs sorted.

Buts thats in the real world and we have a fight on our hands at present so the way we are treated its SH**E and ive had a gut full . Never in all my previous jobs have i been treated as i am by R/M and until youve witnessed it at first hand well as they say " ignorance is bliss "
