Edingburgh - Postal staff back to work after strike

POSTAL staff in the Capital returned to work last night following a wildcat strike which disrupted mail Lothian deliveries.
The Communications Workers Union (CWU) informed Royal Mail bosses that the night shift at the Edinburgh Mail Centre would return to work as normal.

Drivers were expected to make usual mail pick-ups from 4am today after the picket line was removed.

Staff at the Sighthill centre first took unofficial action on Saturday after 13 drivers were sent home without pay for refusing to cross picket lines at other postal centres on official strikes.

The wildcat action continued yesterday and resulted in stoppages at depots in South Gyle, Portobello and Livingston.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "Royal Mail has been told by the CWU at the Edinburgh Mail Centre nightshift will return as normal to work on Monday evening.

"Royal Mail condemns any unlawful and unofficial action, which hurts our business, makes customers leave to competitors, and is extremely unhelpful in times of a recession."
