MAIL will go undelivered when postal workers at Royal Mail's Normanton depot go on strike tomorrow.
Around 140 staff at the depot, the biggest in Yorkshire, will walk out for 24 hours in the latest stoppage over unpopular changes to their pay and conditions.

The strike by the Communications Workers Union is part of a nationwide dispute which will see 12,000 staff walk out from depots in London, Cambridge, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham, Glasgow and Swindon.

UP to 300 postal workers in Hatfield are expected to go on strike tomorrow (Tuesday) in a dispute over pay and job security.

The employees, all of whom are drivers based in the Hatfield Business Park, will walk out for 24 hours from 4am.

The industrial action is the result of an ongoing dispute between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU).

It is not anticipated that postal deliveries across Welwyn Hatfield will be affected.

Workers belonging to the Communication Workers' Union are set to stage a 24-hour walkout as part of an ongoing dispute with employer Royal Mail.

The staff all work on the deliveries side, but managers from the company are expected to be bussed in to provide a skeleton service so that some special delivery and high-priority mail can still get through.

The strike will not affect collections or sorting of mail, which will go ahead as normal.

The unions say the area affected will be all of Portsea Island, Paulsgrove, Farlington, Drayton and Cosham - covering postal areas PO1 to PO6.

The dispute centres on changes to the routines of postal workers and greater use of motor transport and sorting machinery.

Around six weeks ago workers in Portsmouth balloted overwhelmingly to take industrial action over the planned changes, and claims from the union that there has a lack of dialogue between the CWU and company managers.

Reading mail is likely to be delayed again when postal workers in Swindon take 24-hour strike action tomorrow.

The Communication Workers' Union members will be striking from 4am tomorrow until 4am on Wednesday.

All mail collected in Reading is sorted in Swindon so the strike action is likely to cause postal delays in this area.

ANOTHER mail strike will hit Oxfordshire homes and businesses tomorrow.

More than 800 workers at the Swindon sorting office, which has handled the county’s mail since the end of June, will stop work at 4am for 24 hours.

The stoppage comes as workers continue to vote in a national ballot for strike action, which is due to close on October 8.

Chris Rye, Swindon branch secretary of the Communication Workers Union, said: “There have been talks at national level and there has been some movement but we need to push home how serious we are.

“We want a national agreement covering issues such as bullying and harassment and working hours.”

The strike is the first for almost two weeks but affects both sorting office workers and truck drivers delivering mail to the county and is likely to cause a major backlog.

Oxfordshire postal workers also took part in a CWU demonstration at the Labour party conference in Brighton over the weekend.

Paul Garraway, branch secretary of the Oxfordshire CWU, said: “There were about 10 of us and we marched along the seafront.”

Mr Garraway added that he believed any national strike after the ballot closed would start in the week beginning October 12.

He said: “I will be unhappy if we are not on strike. We have waited long enough.”

Royal Mail spokesman Tom Prendergast said: “It is now more clear than ever that the CWU is focusing all its efforts on strike action and political posturing.

“Their claimed support for change is no more than lip service, but their determination to damage services and undermine the future health of the business is increasing.

“Royal Mail is getting on with modernisation in an entirely fair and reasonable way which is completely in line with our existing agreement with the union on flexible working practices.”

Postal strikes were under way in the Midlands today as the threat of national action looms ever closer. It is in response to changes to working pratice.

Walkouts were staged in Coventry and North Staffordshire.

The 24-hour walkout started at 6am today with HGV drivers in Birmingham striking from 4am tomorrow.

Lee Barron, Midlands regional secretary for the Communication Workers Union (CWU), said: “This all relates to managerial changes. The jobs our members are performing have been changed – things like attendance patterns and working days – without consultation.”

Across the country, around 25,000 workers are striking today and tomorrow, which is expected to cause huge backlogs.

Ballots on a national strike close on October 8 and could see 130,000 workers walk out nationwide.

Talks took place between Royal Mail management and the CWU at a national level last week and negotiations are continuing this week.

Royal Mail has attacked the CWU’s strike ballot, which it says is “totally unjustified” and damaging to customers. Royal Mail
claim the strike in Birmingham will not affect the delivery or collection of mail.

MORE than 700 postal workers in Coventry and Leamington have staged a 24 hour walkout in protest of changes to working conditions.

The ongoing dispute involved distribution workers at Coventry’s sorting office in Bishop Street and in Leamington early this morning.

About 20 workers held up signs while drivers sounded their horns as they drove past them in support of the walkout.

Disgruntled postman Gary Smith, aged 33, of Stoke Heath, said: "Management are ignoring the work force - with the lack of jobs in the service we’re having to share out more duties for no extra pay.

"I’ve got a mortgage to pay - it’s getting worse and something has to be done about it."

EAST Devon's businesses and residents were hit by more mail chaos this week as regional sorting offices joined a national strike this week.

Postal workers in sorting offices in Bristol ad Plymouth, which process some of the mail in East Devon, took industrial action from Monday.

Kevin Beazer SW Regional Secretary said: "We recognise that the business community and the general public may be frustrated by the industrial action, but postal workers are defending jobs and the future of the UK postal service.
