TONY and Cherie Blair are facing a battle with neighbours over grand designs for a guest house in the grounds of their £5.75 million country mansion.

The former PM and his wife want to turn a derelict gardener's cottage into a two-bedroom, two-bathroom house.

But neighbours have filed objections to plans submitted to Aylesbury council. They accuse the Blairs of trying to "overdevelop" their historic estate, the Grade I listed South Pavilion in Wotton Underwood, Bucks.

Since buying the house, former home of late acting legend Sir John Gielgud, in August, 2006, the Blairs have already angered neighbours over a car parking extension. And objections were raised to the addition of a swimming pool in 2007.

Now the guest house scheme is also causing concern.

One neighbour wrote to planners: "The application to create a new residential property within the grounds could set a dangerous precedent."

A second objector attacked the Blair's renovation plans as "overdevelopment".

Templeton Associates, the design team behind the renovation, have drawn up plans to extend the cottage from 70 to 120 square metres by adding a 'contemporary rear addition of glass and oak'.

They also want to add solar panels.

Letters between the design team and a neighbour, included in their planning application, reveal the Blairs are also keen to include underfloor heating in their plans.

But they may face a struggle to get the plans approved.

As well as being hampered by listed building regulations, their application is complicated by the location of South Pavilion in a conservation area.

According to the planning officer reviewing the application, developments like the Blairs' would only normally be allowed in areas known as "recognised settlements".

"The council would not normally allow a new dwelling in the countryside," he added. But he said the application was "very much up in the air".

Not all of the Blairs' neighbours are against the proposals.

One has written to planners and wished the couple "good luck" with their proposals.

The South Pavilion is one of four properties owned by the Blairs.

The others include a town house in Connaught Square, London, with a mews house extension.

Last year the Blairs were confronted by planning officials after neighbours accused them of using part of that home as an office

I don't have any problem with Blair living in a posh house.
a prime minister job is going to earn you prime ministers pay.
It is a little sordid the way ex ministers pimp themselves out on the American lecture circuit though.

Even though he took 300 million a year out and then put with Gordon Brown FRS 17 too which most trustees did not put a Penney of employer contribution's while we all paid in the same amount if not more!. It is a CON and even the conservatives would and did not have the audacity to carry out (at the time)!. THIER house's BLAIR and BROWNS are paid by us all and for what NO PENSION and the economey in deep sh*t we the uk are in debt too the tune of £1 trillion £.
