POLL:RM Private Cars on Delivery Procedure

Post by POSTMAN »

WE DON'T WANT THIS THREAD KICKING OFF,AS IT'S WELL VERSED ON HERE THIS TOPIC,THIS IS FOR RMC RESEARCH ONLY.

Can you answer the poll question please,it's straight forward,if you don't use a car for what ever reason then answer what the procedure is in your office.
What we want to know is,is the bond being used at your place or are you or your colleagues using cars for delivery willy nilly.
IE:Without the Royal Mail insurance.
The use of the Royal Mail business insurance cover is only effective if an employee has completed the declaration form and sent the appropriate letter to their insurers, had their appropriate documents checked, had the car checked for road worthiness and is therefore authorised to use the car by the Delivery Office Manager. It is vitally important that periodic checks are made to establish which employees are using official transport. This is to ensure employees are not using their own transport unofficially.Irrespective of the usage, all employees that use a private car for use on delivery must comply with the criteria within this procedure and therefore, includes employees who only use their private cars during the following:
Any part of a working day
Any part of a week, including Saturday
Any part of a year, including Christmas

Royal Mail needs to know how employees get to and from their delivery rounds, and may need to demonstrate this to comply with Health & Safety law.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Why worry about car ? RM must provide transport out .dont matter how long it takes to get you out their, you do your hours and come back at the end of your time or earlier if all work is done.

My Office is considered militant simply we do the job properley, start at start ttime, everyone has meal realeif before going out and RM provides transport-simple and clear.

Then when area Managers try to threaten us,they cant as we do the job properley,if every offie did this RM would be up a creek without a paddle.

I know 1 office where they are absorbing 50 houses a day each and still using their cars,so what do the drivers of BIG RED CREW BUSSES DO when Posties use cars, simply park outside their house for 2 hours in the morning, unless this was for a 2 hour break?

what must people think when we go on stike about working conditions!

in our office the dim checks the documents and the cars. strange that there are a few people without business insurance which means their insurance is invalid because their insurance company have not been informed that they are carrying mail, making the royal mail insurance not worth the paper it's written on.
now this means that the dim does not know what he's doing or doesn't give a f^^k because it gets the job done and it's the driver who will be paying the fine. the dim should not allow anyone who doesn't have business insurance to use private cars. these people are in for a shock if they ever get a pull off the old bill.

Says in this Doc that Private cars should be Security checked weekly....................http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... 36&t=18797" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And this is from the RM Doc

Supervisory checks to safeguard mail are effectively deployed
• Sorting checks with an appropriate focus on security are carried out. as a minimum once
a week
• Delivery pouch checks are carried out. as a minimum once a week
• Security checks of vehicles (including private cars) are carried out. as a minimum once a
week

Our DOM/Lineo is pretty tight on the car use and bond stuff, except they have never done real vehicle checks as far as I know. Just made sure the documents were in date etc.

This has become all to acceptable within our office and it only causes problems when there is annual leave or sickness half the time frames are made up to suit a car and managers just let it go but what happens to the poor meer cat who has to walk it either as the floater to cover the day off or the poor meer cat covering sick/annual leave. :no no

Preaching to the converted here. I have a car and it stays parked in my drive when I am working, and I try to convince people not to use the cars, hence my previous posts - apparently if they are given a choice people ask to cover my duty when I am not in as they know its planned on the basis of a walking delivery and not a Private Car one.

More indeed brother POSTMAN.

HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK
CWU leaders have repeated their call for an end to the use of private cars on delivery following recent prosecutions of postal workers. In the summer, an Essex postman was stopped by police whilst on his delivery round and had his car seized and impounded after police told him his insurance cover was inadequate. He was fined £350, given six point on his licence and had to pay an extra £70 to upgrade his private motor insurance to commercial business cover.

In an almost identical case a Cheshire postman was also hit with similar huge fines and fees and six points on his licence when police stopped him on his round. CWU national health and safety officer Dave Joyce said: "These are just the most recent casesof our members suffering as a result of using their own, privately owned vehicles on delivery. "In the past, there have been more serious cases of our members being injured whilst using their own cars on delivery. It's not a good record and it's time for Royal Mail to stop talking about it and to act by ending the practice and making sure that staff don't need to use their cars anymore."

CWU assistant secretary Bob Gibson, who is the union's national officer for delivery worker, said: "As has been highlighted here, in an increasing number of cases, our members are driving around without the appropriate insurance, which can have serious and far-reaching consequences. "There is really only one answer - don't do it."

Royal Mail bosses have claimed that they intend to end this practice - the company's safety director Norman Smith has told Dave Joyce: "It is our intention to remove the use of private cars on delivery and so remove incidents like the examples you cite." But the union is sceptical about the company's commitment to this, citing the concerns over the recent increase use of casual staff on deliveries and agency workers and asking whether sufficient compliance checks are being carried out with these temporary employees.
