Whatever happens to Brown government, "Labour is old news in Brighton," says Green Party leader's new ad campaign



Firing the first salvo in her bid to take the Brighton Pavilion constituency from Labour at the general election, Green Party leader Caroline Lucas MEP has launched a powerful billboard campaign to run throughout Labour's Brighton conference.

The posters, devised by the Green Party's retained ad agency glue London, observe that twice as many people in Brighton (31%) voted Green in the recent European elections as voted Labour (15%), with the Conservatives on 22% also far behind the Greens. The Greens came first throughout all three constituencies in Brighton and Hove, and recently leapfrogged from third place to take a council seat from the Conservatives in the Goldsmid by-election in the city. In Caroline Lucas's Pavilion constituency, since 2005 the Greens have come first in every election, claiming a majority of the local council seats.

The Greens' campaign director for Brighton Pavilion, Paul Steedman, said today:

"The Green Party's record of winning in Brighton and Hove will literally be part of the scenery of the Labour conference. Everywhere they go, Labour delegates will be reminded that in this year's elections the Greens got more than twice as many votes as Labour, and only Caroline Lucas can beat the Conservatives in Brighton Pavilion."

The biggest of the campaign posters, measuring 9m x 9m, went up this morning and can be seen at the corner of Queens Road and North Road, en route from Brighton station to the seafront.

Paul Steedman continued:

"We're going all out to win in Brighton Pavilion. Caroline Lucas is an exceptional candidate. We have hundreds of volunteers committed to helping the campaign. On the doorsteps, where it really counts, people are telling us that they're sick of Labour, that they don't trust Cameron, that they want the positive change the Greens are offering."

Caroline Lucas, candidate for Brighton Pavilion, said:

"I will be putting forward rigorous policies for more jobs, and better pay for nurses, cleaners and shopworkers, not just City slickers; for an NHS that doesn't leave people in Brighton - or anywhere else - without healthcare because they can't afford prescription charges or dental fees; for a rail network that works - and that people can actually afford to use. I will stand up for all of Brighton's communities, and we're going to show that politics can be about a fair deal for everyone."

Paul Steedman added:

"In Brighton Pavilion, it's a straight fight between the Greens and the Conservatives. Every election in the city since the last general election has demonstrated this. The Conservatives are desperate to stop a Lucas victory. They don't want the only female leader of a political party in parliament, breaking up their old boys club. The Conservatives say they'll hold a splashy 'primary' contest to grab headlines, but it will leave our broken political system unchanged.

"I'm confident Brighton voters will see through this charade to the slash-and-burn Conservative policy of service cuts that will apply, whoever they select."

The only thing the Labour Party has going for it these days is the old line "It will be worse if the Tories get back in!" And that's it! Anyone would think we've been living in a Workers Utopia for the last 12 years instead of having a mob in charge who have closed down schools, hospitals, become a tool of American foreign policy and given us mass unemplyment. If the Tories get back in, the Labour Party has only itself to blame.

Whoever gets in, they're all out to screw us mate! Just suppose Labour wins, I don't see things getting any better for the average man, woman or child in this country. They've had 12 years. It's not as if they'll suddenly start building hospitals, houses or schools. They won't invest in an integrated transport system providing cheap and reliable busses and trains to attract people out of their cars. They'll carry on running down the services people rely on, carry on reducing our civil liberties, carry on sending our young men to kill and be killed by some other governments young men and support the crapitalist system which breaks down every few years leaving millions in misery. Let's face it - they're all a shower of bastards.

I'll make a point of reminding you of this statement 4 years down the line

Thats when the Mail Service has been sold off, you are scheduled to retire at 68, then 69, then 70 etc - you are walking/cycling to work because petrol is so dear, you won't be able to drown your sorrows because it'll cost too much, you will have elctricity and gas on alternate days because that will have risen to make even more profits. You will have to bury the likes of me discreetly in back gardens because funerals will be out of the question. You won't actually get a wage - tax, insurance and vat will be so high you will be given food stamps and vouchers and 50p pocket money to spend how you like. Now all these things will probably happen under a Labour Government - it will just take longer and you'll get a £1 to spend.

You'll be asking which DAY the bus runs and the fare will be far more expensive than your pocket money, so you'll need to bike it - and you didn't mention the drinky poos - presumably you aren't tea total - make it a half every couple of weeks, that should be OK, if you dig your lawn up and start growing your own veg - Oh and start saving up for the pig.

Bus fares are going up all the time, it will just carry on regardless of Tory or Labour!

Both town and supermarket are within walking distance anyway

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm aren't they scrummy - they'll need a damned good scrubbing first though, then they'll have to be graded, then of course the menu will have to be designed - Suckling Lino, Coq au Manager, well the list could be endless - there could even be a fast food version - Big Mac, Bargain Bucket, Whopper - now what have you get in the veggie patch to go with a Big Mac BD - corn?
