Royal Mail Boss Crozier Hits Out At Unions

The boss of Royal Mail has hit out at union leaders for "frustrating" attempts to rescue the struggling business.

In an exclusive interview with Sky's Jeff Randall, chief executive Adam Crozier accused the union of blocking attempts to make the business more efficient.

"In a nutshell what we have is a company that needs to modernise to survive and a union that, whilst on the face of it is saying it's up for modernisation, is actually doing pretty much everything it can to frustrate those changes on the ground."

He went on to focus the blame on workers in the London area.

"What we really need is people to get on with that modernisation.

"We're now in the final throes of that and we're doing that in London, and in London the union and some of our people don't want to make those changes.

"All we're asking for is our people to work in London all the hours they are paid to work and I do not think for any company that that is an unreasonable request."

Mr Crozier's comments come as the Communication Workers Union is ballotting its 121,000 members in the Royal Mail over possible national industrial action.

In an interview for Jeff Randall Live, Billy Hayes, general secretary of the CWU said that he expects his members to vote in favour of strike action.

"The fact of the matter is, I don't think Royal Mail would dispute this, that changes have taken place without support of the workforce.

"That'll be signified by the ballot result we're expecting which will be a yes vote."

If the proposed strike takes place it will be the worst industrial action to hit the Royal Mail since 2007.

The threat of a strike in the run-up to Christmas is the latest problem for Royal Mail in the six years that Adam Crozier has been in charge.

In 2008 the Royal Mail cancelled both its second daily delivery and Sunday collections.

Over the past two years 2,500 post offices have closed, while more than 40,000 postal workers' jobs have been lost.

The Royal Mail's pension deficit has also now ballooned to close to £10bn.

Earlier this year business secretary Lord Mandelson was forced to pull back from plans to part-privatise the Royal Mail after Labour backbenchers threatened to block the move.

Adam the company isn't modernised its just slashing the workforce. Modern companies don't treat the staff like ****. Everyone is guarteed a saturday off. And they are probably semi-happy at work. Plus the manager manage the staff with respect and dignity.
Something RM manager don't do.

Isn't the 18 months up yet?
I seem to remember you also saying that you would be retiring this summer and moving to the West Country.
When can we expect that happy event? :Very Happy

It may be hard for you to accept that theres a good proportion of us who think national strikes are madness but you'll have to live with it.

How do you thing things would be if we did not strike.

And please answer,so many times you put out one liners and when we question them you ignore us.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I think we have a problem with the profit issue, CWU and it's members seem to focus purley on GROUP profits were as Royal Mail focus on the profits of Royal Mail Letters.

There is a quite a differernce betwen the two figures.

58 million profit for letters

321 million profit for Group

RMl contributed less than a fifth of group profits and then is the issue RM are working on, they want to increase the profit level of RML as they dont belive its high enough compared to RML income. RM dont give a stuff about group profits when it comes to the finances of RML!!!

About sums it up and you'll have to dig really deep to find anyone that sees national strikes as the answer, other than losing money. To hell with that. All this crap about supporting the union. Thought they were there to support members not the other way around. As for my reitement, AGAIN thats MY affair but feel free to do wild goose chase searches. I give nothing away that would lead you anywhere - just like the rest of you. Quite right too.

And you don't think that, that attitude from the Public, is because of the blatant propaganda, and smears?
The alleged Spannish Practices (what do they have against the Spannish FFS!), which although they may have existed at some point. Certainly don't exist now. All this talk of Modernisation. Yet I've not seen any evidence of new equipment yet.

It amazes me, that the Public haven't realised, that if people were cutting off to finish early (and there was me, thinking that cutting off, was when you stopped at the END of your Duty  ), they wouldn't be getting their Mail in the late afternoon. :arrrghhh :arrrghhh

Striking may not be the answer. But unless the negotiations are successful. What other option do we have? :hmmmm
