Post staff in new wildcat strike

Postal workers in the west of Scotland have staged another wildcat strike in an ongoing dispute about drivers not crossing official picket lines.

Royal Mail said a number of staff at its Glasgow Mail Centre had taken "unofficial and unlawful" action.

Staff at 12 other delivery offices in the city, Paisley and Ayr have also joined the walkout.

Similar action on Friday disrupted work at 14 delivery offices across the west of Scotland.

The dispute started after several drivers were sent home without pay for refusing to cross an official picket line.

Royal Mail said this was "standard practice" where staff refused to work while not taking industrial action.

A spokesman said:"Unfortunately staff in Glasgow Mail Centre and in 12 other delivery offices in the West of Scotland have taken unofficial, unlawful industrial action today.

Customer apology

"Royal Mail is doing all that it can do to deliver the mail to our customers and we apologise wholeheartedly to customers for the difficulties caused by strikes.

"We would urge our people to get back to work, this is unofficial and unlawful action that only hurts our business and our customers, who now have many other options for mail deliveries.

"The Communication Workers Union (CWU) should be repudiating this action and urging its members to return to work."

The CWU is involved in on-going official strike action against Royal Mail.

Both parties have accused each other of reneging on a deal reached in 2007 aimed at modernising the service.

The union has accused bosses of forcing through change without consultation. Royal Mail said the changes were needed to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.
